Avg time to climb route: 1 hour
Approach time: 5 minutes Descent time: 10 minutes Number of pitches: 1 Height of route: 140? Overview
Varied, steep, and clean, Lunatic Fringe is one of the best 5.10 cracks in Yosemite, splitting a steep granite wall to the right of Reed?s Pinnacle. Starting with a fun 5.6 hand crack which gets you well off the deck, an amazingly cool crack offers fingers, off-fingers, thin hands, wide hands, lieback, flakes, more hands and fingers, and finally thin fingers and knobby face. While you are often warned of sustained climbing, it actually has many excellent rests, and the climbing depends more on your diversity as a crack climber than on endurance or power. It is difficult to name a crux, since with so much variety, each climber finds a different section to be the hardest part.
