High Sierra, California USA | ||
|
Avg time to climb route: 3-6 hours
Approach time: 4-7 hours Descent time: 4-7 hours Number of pitches: N/A Height of route: 800' Overview
With a striking line, big exposure, and great rock, the East Ridge is one of the best 3rd class routes anywhere. It was by this route that Norman Clyde made the first ascent of Mt. Russell in 1926. While the climb is rated 3rd class, it has a few places where good routefinding skills are critical to avoid climbing harder terrain. In addition, the exposure in some sections makes this much more demanding than the Mountaineer’s Route on Mt. Whitney. Overall, this is one of the of best 3rd class routes you will ever do.Photos
