Bay Area Bouldering, California, USA
Approach time: 5 minutes
Season: Year Round Number of problems: 15 Type of rock: Greenstone and Schist Overview
In the Sierra foothills next to the Middle Fork of the American River near the town of Auburn is a collection of sculpted, waterpolished boulders and cliffs known as The Bar. Located inside the Auburn State Recreation Area at the Mammoth Bar OHV Park, bouldering is considered a legitimate activity. The river is close to a lot of the boulders so the higher water levels of winter and spring can submerge some of the problems. Fall is usually perfect, with cool temps and dry problems. In summer the river will be lower and most of the boulders dry but it can get hot. No worries, just downstream (make sure its downstream) from the Murderers Bar Rapid are some good swimming holes that are no farther than a stumble from most of the boulders.
