Sierra Buttes

200+ problems + potential. Near Downieville/Sierra City. This is one of the best new areas in Northern Cali with many solid featured boulders in a classic High Sierra setting. It has an adventurous alpine feel with weird but awesome rock. You boulder in large talus fields in a series of giant hanging valleys.

Directions: From I80 in Truckee take CA-89 north for about 20 miles to the junction of CA-49 in Sierraville and turn left (west) onto CA-89/CA-49. Go a few miles to a left turn onto CA-49 west and go over Yuba Pass to Bassets and zero your odometer. It’s about 2.3 miles to the main parking for Sierra Buttes on the left (river) side of CA-49. Locate the trailhead across CA-49 just down from the parking area up an old road just past the creek on the right. Follow the trail up the steep hill known as Hells Half Mile to Free For All Valley. The Only Boulder is the first big boulder you get to. It has 20 or so problems and is the most popular boulder in the area. Check out: Visionbouldering.com for more info.
