Bay Area Bouldering, California, USA
Approach time: 10-15 minutes
Season: Year Round Number of problems: 20 Type of rock: Schist/Chert Overview
Some of the most difficult sport climbs in the Bay Area are on the main face of the Sea Crag and some of the most far out bouldering can be found there as well. The schist boulders that surround Sea Crag have problems from 5.0-V6 with mostly rocky or watery landings. Pads, spotters, and cajones will help, but good old fashioned skills will work the best. The massive chert boulder in the north cove known as The Humpback with its beach front property and highball problems over sandy landings is the main attraction by far. The striations in the chert offer in-cut horizontal fingertip edges a lot like the rock at the popular Glen Canyon in San Francisco. It is found on the beach in the cove to the north of the Sea Crag. Classics adorn every side of this huge “whale” of a boulder with overhanging problems on the eastside and vertical-slabby highballs on all the rest. Sandy landings mixed with rocks at different times of year require pads and a low tide is also best for The Humpback unless you don’t mind getting your shoes wet. Notable Bouldering Problems
Humpback V6, Medula-Oblongota V5, Chalka Khan V4, Hibi Gibis V3, South Face V0R Photos
