Avg time to climb route: 3-6 hours
Approach time: 2-3 hours Descent time: 2-3 hours Number of pitches: 8 Height of route: 500' (length is 1 mile) Overview
The traverse from south to north is the standard route, and almost synonymous with the Matthes Crest. Walking along an exposed ridge with sections of technical climbing characterize the climb. Dozens of short routes have also been done on the sides of the Crest since the 1960s, but have generally not been recorded. Most parties only do two-thirds of the ridge—yet the climbing is great for the entire length. The Matthes Crest is sought after for its length, enjoyable climbing, and spectacular positions in the midst of some of the most amazing scenery anywhere.
