Lake Tahoe Bouldering, California, USA
Approach time: 5 minutes
Season: May-November Number of problems: 104 Type of rock: Volcanic Overview
This is a nice change of pace: volcanic rock. The Old County boulders are the same welded tuff as the Big Chief climbing area, and make for a totally different style of climbing than the familiar granite found elsewhere. This stuff is one giant hold, every inch of which is probably climbable at one grade or another. It’s also wicked sharp. If you can stand the loss of friction and sensitivity, it’s worth taping all your tips before starting your session if you have any interest in climbing tomorrow. The pointy, discontinuous nature of the features makes for interesting beta. There are Spock holds, rotary phone dials, Boy Scout salutes, and some that feel like grabbing the lower canines of a howler monkey – how you place your fingers is as important as where. Notable Bouldering Problems
Smoke This (V5), Sit Down and Smoke This (V7), High Speed Dirt (V6). Photos
