Northern California Bouldering, USA
Approach time: 1-15 minutes
Season: Spring Summer Fall Number of problems: 100 Type of rock: Granite Overview
The Loony’s are one of the most recently developed and vast bouldering areas in Nor Cal. Everything from highball friction slabs to steep V double-digit projects abound. The granite is similar to that found at other popular areas in the Sierras yet it has its own unique characteristics as well. Most of the problems here were developed by Dave Nunley and his topos were used to help make the Loonies section of this guide. Big Props go out to Dave! The world famous Jeepers Jamboree is held here every July/August on the infamous Rubicon Trail. Over 20 miles of rocky off road fun is between Loon Lake and the west shore of Lake Tahoe. It’s fun to watch and it all gets started right from the boulders. Expect crowds of off road enthusiasts in the mid summer around the campgrounds and trailheads. But no worries, most of the boulders are hidden in the forest away from the mayhem. The rest of the year Loon Lake is peaceful, quiet and remote. Notable Bouldering Problems
