Northern California Bouldering, USA
Approach time: 5-15 minutes
Season: Year Round Number of problems: 10 Type of rock: Limestone Overview
When gold was discovered in Columbia in 1850, it only took three years to become the third largest city in the state. The bouldering is right in the center of town next to gold panning and 1850s style shops and scenery. Columbia and the surrounding rocky hills were featured in many Wild West cowboy movies and television shows like “The Lone Ranger” and the classic “High Noon” with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in the 1950s. These boulders are the same solid and uniquely featured marble limestone as the nearby Columbia College. They are more spread out but have good beginner to intermediate problems (VB-V5) plus a few more difficult problems and a lot of potential in the Labyrinth between the park and the college. I remember coming here as a young kid with my grandparents and gold panning and riding the stagecoach that gets held up by bandits that hide in the Stagecoach Boulders. Notable Bouldering Problems
Wide Crack aka Gold Mine Arete V0/1**, The Prow V5*** sit, Stage Coach Arete aka Ghost Town Arete V0/1***, Stage Coach Traverse aka Ghost Town Traverse V3/4***, Aries Curse aka Labyrinth Cave V6/7/8/9**** many variations (hidden near the top of the Labyrinth), Minotaur V5*** highball face/prow to horn!
