Overview

Ring Mountain is a nature preserve with a few hiking/biking trails and two distinct rock formations: Split Rock and Turtle Rock. Split Rock is the obvious slabby rock south of the parking area at the end of Taylor Rd. Turtle is over the hill a short hike to the west. There is also a smaller third formation known as Meatballs, which is found to the right (north) of the trailhead to Turtle just after the gate on the driveway/paved access road. There are a few good problems on Meatballs but most of them are high over rocks and could use a toprope. Split Rock’s main face has probably been climbed since the 1950s or 60s and it’s no wonder why. The (mostly) solid, well-featured highball slab face is a perfect toprope for beginners or an exciting solo for an experienced boulderer. The steeper Turtle Rock was overlooked until two local brothers/climbing partners, Gary and Russ Bobzien, came along in the late 1970s and cleaned and climbed its more challenging faces. They established some of the most picturesque boulder problems in the Bay Area. Now you can climb the never-ending traverse or the multitude of short or high, easy to moderate problems, then sit down and enjoy some of the best views of the Bay.
