That was a great moment. You could just see him promising one to his girls if they hung in there for the rest of the campaign.

I'd suggest a Labrador for a first puppy. Good kid dog.
I like Dobermans myself, but they're a lot of work if you don't want them to turn out to be monsters.

A wolfhound. Not a small dog like a Great Dane or Rottweiler, wonderful with kids, and as noble as it gets.
I just got another wolfhound a few weeks ago. Here he is at 12 weeks old.

I asked Loki, and she said "First Dog? What a bunch of nonsense! Dogs are inferior subservient beings. Dogs have masters, and we've had enough of that crap, haven't we? Let's talk about the First Cat - that's way more interesting. Cats are superior in all ways, and not slow to let silly humans know their place. And there are some genuine American cats, too. Maybe the First Cat can have a First Dog, though, for entertainment and playing, and for sharpening claws."

I'm with Karen. Mutts are by far the best dogs. Most pure breeds are inbred, live shorter and have more problems as well as finicky temperaments.

I just hope they pick one up from the pound. I really think that rescuing a dog would be a symbolic move.

Definately shelter/pound dog. Something small if no lab/retrievers are available.
My chihuahua/terrier/dachsund (I think) mix is a great dog.

Although Obama is undoubtedly rather busy at the moment, here's the latest from Mr. B.:
"The Obamas are looking for a hypoallergenic breed because his elder daughter, 10-year-old Malia, has allergies, he said. The family would also prefer to adopt a dog from an animal shelter, he said. 'But, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me,' Obama said, a disarming reference to his biracial heritage. 'So whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household.'"

Maybe they can talk the proud owners of Elwood, the Chinese Crested Chihuahua to give up this proud pooch:
Voted 'World's Ugliest Dog', and pretty much hairless, too- that should help Malia's allergies...

There seem to be a fair number of dog breeds that are at least to some extent hypoallergenic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic_dog_breeds
Most of them have short hair, don't shed, or both. None are entirely hypoallergenic, as the allergens are in both hair and saliva.
There don't seem to be as many hypoallergenic cats, although with cats, it's much more the saliva than the fur that causes the reaction:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_allergy
Most of the allegedly hypoallergenic cat breeds seem, to be honest, to be a bit strange, or politically suspect - Siberian, Russian Blue, LaPerm, Sphynx, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex.
