Yes, it looks like spring. My tiny ash and maple trees budded out today. All the snow melted today.

Spring has indeed come and in abundance. This is from a thread about a bummer day turned magical. (http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=589744);.

I finally found a sign of spring today! I was planning on hitting my semi regular free solo route, but the wind was really howling, pretty consistant at 30-40 mph at the base, which meant it would be getting blasts of 60 on the route, and I just wasn't quite up to that much fun. So I figured I'd hit some slabs which I thought would be a bit more protected from the wind, but alas no. So I figured playing billygoat along the ridge to see if there might be a decent bouldering area or two would be a good way to spend my lunchtime. I found one kina interesting slab and started heading up in my horrid approach shows. 1/2 way I up I was pleasantly suprised to find this.

Which turned out to be the only flower I saw after trapsing around a couple of miles. The view of the inlet was as inspiring as ever.

I decided to trot along the ridge to the top of one of the very few crack routes to see if the anchors were still in good shape. Yup, all three of the 1/2" bolts and chains I'd placed were still there, and some bumbly had to put some bright red perlon and a locking biner around a tree 20 feet above the anchor, as if there isn't already enough rope drag when you pull from the chains??? I swear some folks up here seem to think you can't claim to have climbed something until you leave some perlon or bright webbing at the top.

But all was cool. As I walked back up the ridge I snagged my sweater on a bush, and as I turned bag to untangle it I saw this. I feel like a boob for not noticing it at first, but was glad to have snarled up my sweater lest I would have missed it.

Tolman, keep up with the Seward Highway photos. That's such a pretty place to live near.

I need to get out to a field off the Glenn highway right by the border of Anchorage/Matanuska municipalities. It is the most amazing display of wild iris' I've ever seen, as far as you can see. They should be blooming in another month, or so. For some reason I've never been out there with a camera.

Warm days, cool nights, the bugs aren't out yet ... beautiful weather out here lately, except it's white pine mating season.
