June. The Batholith. The Middle of the Goods.
Any insect issues?
Anyone know the age of the Batholith?

Generally I don't seem to remember insects being an issue, around the lake somewhat, but not too big of a deal.

If we go into Humbugs(which we should!) the bugs could be a bit bad while hanging out around the base or in the forest, but nothing a little spray and dryer sheets can't handle.

Not too sure on the age of the rock out here...hopefully someone else can chime in on that subject.

It's Cretaceous. The Batholith that is. About 70 million years old. Crack pumpin dinosaurs and all that. Serious.

My appearance depends on some possible big travel this summer.

From Wikipedia:

The Boulder Batholith is a small batholith in southwest Montana, exposed at the surface as granite and serving as the host rock for rich mineralized deposits at Butte, Montana and other locations.
The batholith is composed of at least seven and possibly as many as 14 discrete rock masses called plutons, which formed beneath the earth’s surface during a period of magma intrusion about 73 to 78 million years ago (Late Cretaceous time).[1] The rising buoyant plutons resulted from subduction along what was then the west coast of North America. Regional uplift brought the deep-seated granite to the surface, where erosion exposed the rocks and the mineral veins they contained.
The Boulder Batholith was named for the prominent rounded boulders that typify its landscape, the result of spheroidal weathering of fractured granite. It measures approximately 75 miles north-south by about 25 miles east-west, rather small in comparison to most batholiths.

...the rocks are identified as Butte quartz monzonite. The Butte quartz monzonite is an equigranular rock consisting o 35% plagioclase, 30% potassium feldspar, 20% quartz, 15% hornblende and biotite with minor accessory minerals. Locally the rock includes areas with crystals of potassium feldspar up to 10 inches in length (chicken heads?).---A climber's guide to Butte, Dwight Bishop.

Yep. Boulder Batholith. Idaho Batholith. Sierra Nevada Batholith. All more or less the same age and the same composition.

And we pull on three of em too.

Another thing to consider is the approach into the Humbugs. I highly suggest folks go out and at least tick off the Wedge(pictured). If y'all are interested in doing some climbing out here, it'll either be a long day or you could do an overnight(since it's ~4 miles in). If folks are interested in camping out there, we could do a group meal(s) out there to cut down on weight etc...

just something to consider...

I could guide people in the back way to the Wedge for a quicker one day climb. I should be around. If people are around Spire Rock (and the Fish Creek road is Ok) it would be faster coming from Spire Rock. -Kurt

Thanks, Kurt. I was planning on also being a "tour" guide for the folks participating. The expanse of the Batholith needs local support to help the Bashers get what they are looking for in the climbing department.

Hey Montana climbers- Anyone have or know of a Montana climbing accident that should be in Accidents in North American Mountaineering? I am gathering info on MT and ID for Jed Williamson for this year's ANAM.

Pop me an email if you do.

And those Humbugs look really fun- I think we are out of town that week but if not, it isn't far from Driggs ID where I live.

thanks

OK, a beer and two shots and there's no way that I'm about to read 100 posts, but somebody email me and clue me in.

There is a mule that I kept for a decade and then my partner took him up by Flathead Lake about 16 years ago and if he makes it through another Montana winter outdoors I feel honor bound to drop by and scratch his ear just the way he likes.

Is the base camp going to be at the lake or the hot springs?

Or is that still up in the air?
