Ya know, tradman...I've never actively hidden my name...I've just never put it out there like a hood ornament.

Anyone who thinks I've been 'hiding' hasn't paid very close attention to my 15K posts (holy shitsteaks)...there are plenty of examples in there of who I am, what I do, where I live...and there are a good number of people here who know exactly who I am, and where I live.

I don't intend to keep posting on this, but there's a train wreck quality that makes it hard to turn away. So my question:

If you have not been "hiding" and there are "plenty of examples in there of who I am, what I do, where I live...and there are a good number of people here who know exactly who I am, and where I live" . . .

why did you accuse of Ron of "staking" you or seem so shocked and appalled if Ron posted something that says "who you are, what you do, where you live" etc.?

Just curious, especially when you seem to think what Ron did was some sort of crime.

Will the people who used to post quality climbing threads return?

There still are plenty of people who do. You deleted all your tr's didn't you?? Way to contribute climbing to this forum.

I lurked here forever until Anders stopped posting to Climbing at Squamish in the 1970's. The Squamish content dried up real quick. All the people were still here though, there just wasn't a vessel for the conversation. So i started one, and contributed pictures to it to try and stimulate a few memories. Almost 7000 posts later, we're still going.

Point is, this forum is what you make of it. And ya sh#t falls off the front page. That's what bumps are for. Sometimes a random comment can spur on gold. If you post up some content, bump it! We'll catch it eventually.

Edit oh Apogee, if you post it anywhere on the internet, it's public knowledge bro. Don't post it if you don't want it published.

Edit2 oh yeah.

aahhh. the ole anonymity debate.

i never understand how you old guys [it is ironically only old guys who seem to bitch about this] suddenly get so myopic when the topic of anonymity comes up.

sure some people use it as a way to say assaholic things that they otherwise wouldn't have the guts to.

but for everyone of those there's another who is a decent person with good reason to keep their names off the searchable internet [women, rare names, etc]

the myopathy comes when you guys fail to see that for every anonymous dick who slings mud, calls people names, etc, there's another dick whose name we all know, who does the same thing.

just as, for every respectful person posting behind their real name, there are respectful posters using avatars.

anonymity doesn't really change the game, it just adds more voices into the mix.

comme ci, comme ça.

ultimately as has been pointed out, if a person really crosses a line, they are legally responsible regardless of whether they are anonymous or not.

so why not just enjoy the contributing voices and ignore the as#@&%es, regardless of their anonymity?

the only reason as#@&%es [anonymous or not] gain traction around here is because everyone is so quick to engage them...

again...

and again...

and again...

and again...

[repeat ad infinitum]

if you guys are serious about making this a decent place it has nothing to do with anonynymity or not.

it has to do with who people choose to engage and who people choose to ignore.

Fish,

Are you typing to yourself again? lol Let's face it this forum can be good. It can also suck. I read the sucky threads all the time and very seldom post to them. They are like train wrecks. You just can't stop watching. Some funny sh#t to be read in here for sure.

"I ran into the fortune-teller who said beware of lightning that might strike.

I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like.

There's a lone soldier on the cross . . . smoke pouring out of a boxcar door.

You didn't know it . . . you didn't think it could be done.

In the final end . . . he won the wars, after losing every battle.

I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things sometimes are . . . visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars.

You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies.

One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes . . . blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb . . . blowing through the curtains in your room.

Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth . . . you're an idiot babe . . . it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe."

Hankster seems have this place fairly figured out. I kind of see it like this.....

If you're a generally good and genuine and fun person, sites like Supertopo (avatar or no avatar) reveal/portray you to be good and genuine and fun. Ie: Mark Hudon, J Elezarian, Vitaliy etc...

If you're a generally normal person but have a tendency to be angry and resentful and
combative....the internet really magnifies those characteristics and you pretty much become un-likeable or un-liked by most of the "normal folk" as you engage with others just like you.

So a place like Supertopo really seems to incubate aggression and anger for some and stoke for others. Its really just not a good match for some people......and those are the people who basically seem to be addicted to the place.

Sadly, eventually the good folks get tired of all the lame actors, and they move on. Which is a bummer 'cause guys like Hudon and others used to make this place so enjoyable.

Just a few thoughts.......

There are a few avatars who really stand out as special due to possitive vibes they give off. Dingus comes to mind. I am good with that and would like to climb with Dingus someday. Most of the avatars who never post climbing content and simply hide behind a screen name to sling sh#t 24/7 are worthless cowards. If you are not brave enough to stand behind your words that = coward. If you hide behind an avatar and attack people you are pretty much a cowardly scumbag.
