Man that sucks, Nic has been ripped off pretty hard the last couple seasons. Hope he gets it all back. I had my jugs, aiders, harness, griri, and a killer petzl rescue pulley along with my bros harness, daisy, misty mountian aider, shoes and chalk bag stoeln from the base of the Heart Ledges raps area. Kinda my fault as I left it out and was back at the base at 7am the next day, but i assuemd people would see it a a cache and not booty. Gotta be careful in the valley.

gear is expensive now. I remember a buddy bought an entire rack at REI for ~$120; some 15 biners, a full set of stoppers and hexes, perlon to rack 'em, and heck even a gear sling. That was in the late '70s, so that same money is worth about $300 today (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/);.
Man, these days you'd have to be pretty good to climb on a $300 rack. Let me see, a set of nuts, ~7 biners, and 4-5 cams. Get down!
My point? A haulbag full of gear is a gold mine to some. $10k at the Creek, yikes. Who steals that stuff? I think the meth-head comment is close.

If you do catch a gear thief in the act better to just report them to the rangers. Its not worth the jail time.

Excellent, Juan! You're the perfect victim. Scum bags count on a pacifist attitude like that to get away with stuff. Leave it to the LEOs? Right. They'll be there about 10 minutes after the perp has left, and they're not likely to put theft of climbing gear very high on their priority list. Felonies tend to get the greater share of detective's attention. You leave it up to the LEOs, Juan. I'd rather protect my property and my family with "me" as my first line of defense.
I'm sure it's different in the People's Republic of California, but in AZ you can use physical force to defend your property or possessions. Justifiable ass-whuppin.

Yeah right Juan.
I'm sure the rangers will do a bang up job, that they won't let the thieves plead it out, or claim that they simply mistook the stuff for thier own gear, or make a procedural error that tosses the case. Yeah they do such a good job of spotting the real criminals and leaving the others in peace.
My $.02;
terrifying a thief leaves no marks (OK maybe urine stains) and if there is 'evidence of a struggle' in a citizen(s) apprehending a thief the rangers are likely to accept it as something that the criminal brought on if the appearance of the injuries is not TOO severe,
(but some forms of injury do not leave as visible an indication of trauma.)
