There is a higher law, and in The Good Book, BASE jumping is not a crime.
Neither is skateboarding, climbing, or any other adventure sport a crime.
Marijuana or the subspecies of the marijuana plant, Cannabis Sativa Sativa and Cannabis Sativa Indica, are obviously made by The Creator. It has a purpose.
Using it to smoke isn't such a good idea, however, it does have good medicinal purposes and should be used as such. Also makes good hemp rope, and very good clothing. Apparently it can make great paper products also.

Yes, you were found guilty of an offense (breaking a law).

Conviction = a person proved or declared guilty of an offense.
The opposite of a conviction is an acquittal.
In the eye of the law, you are a criminal by all basic definitions. You should have your lawyer explain things to you.
Doesn't mean that you were a defendant and went to trial in front of a jury of your peers. That is one way to be convicted. That might be a common misbelieve as well.
But by your plea of guilty, bench trial, or jury trial you have been found guilty of a crime.
