Aphidoidea is a large family of bugs called whiteflies, greenflies or blackflies.

Dr. Greenjeans Warned Me

Saying nothing, he examined my soon-to-be-missing thumb.

Eventually, he wrapped it in fresh gauze and said in a matter-of-fact way,
"Your thumb is turning green.
I think it's gotta go.
The nurses will prep you in the morning.
Just thought you'd like to have a last night with it.
It's a good thing you're not a musician."

What a kind thought.

One of my running routes circled Balboa Island and I passed the Duke's house all the time. Never saw him at home, but I ran into him shopping at Fashion Island.

He was so happy when I recognized him but didn't approach him that he just gave me the pilgrim nod.

He carried around "pre-signed" cards to hand out to admirers so he didn't have to take the time to write. I never saw what, but I'm gusssing they wre pre-printed.

Don't ya love Gary's shoes?

Speaking of cowboys, I used to run past Dennis Weaver's house on the border of Ridgway and Ourey (some say). I say it was in Ridgway. Only donini knows for sure.

Bear feeder, Donna Munson (RIP) definitely lived in Ourey.

UCM now offers a program on becoming a Ranger.

I know a former Park Ranger named Maynard Medefind. He's a classmate of mine from '66.

Son of a bush if I didn't bump into him at the breakfast table today.

He and a fellow named Stephen Maxey are planning a Yosemite trip for homeless men from Merced on the 15th. Their purpose is to let them take photos of their experience and later expound on their impressions of the park.

This is in conjunction, as I understand it, with a larger program that Stephen is running under the auspices of the Multicultural Art Center, which gives the homeless here in town a chance to do the same with their everyday lives.

Since Maynard was a Ranger many years ago, he of course knows the Rev and remembers his name and another's being written in concrete somewhere up at the old ranger cabin at Merced Lake. Since I have never been to Merced Lake, this was news to me. Jeff has never mentioned it, but it's time to find out about it.

Maynard is a retired Atwater HS teacher, and has a fine reputation here. It will be a pleasure and privilege to work with him and Stephen, since they invited me along when I volunteered to take some of the load.

Maynard was even kind enough to pay for our meals. Thanks, bud. It was not our doing that brought us together this morning. Thank you, too, big brother in the sky.

Trolling around under the old (1940) Hwy 99 Bear Creek bridges this afternoon was hard on me.

But hearing of the death of my good friend and Flames associate, John Feaver, was even harder. He was a year younger, 67.

He came to Merced with friends from Los Banos HS every so often and became one of my circle, which included the Rev, who was at the time we met up with Feav, working in his dad's auto body shop and attending Merced College.

I was just out of USNTC boot camp in San Diego and attending basic electricity/electronics classes and coming on the bus to jive on the weekends instead of doing nothing at the school's barracks.

He became qualified for the draft and was drafted soon after this. He spent one tour with the Army in the shet over in Vietnam. He came back and I spent quite a bit of time with him in the early '70s. We went fishing at Lake McSwain in his father-in-law's boat.

When Dolores and I were stuck in Merced while I was between jobs and hoping to get another one with North Face after they folded the Lowa warehouse, John and his wife Carla opened their home and gave us a room for two weeks while I made plans to get us up to Berkeley to stay with Bruce and Cathy Hamilton for another couple of weeks.

The goodness of this man is just not easy to talk about. He was easy-going but had a temper, or I might say he was ready to take down anyone who messed with him. And this happened several times. He had a tough life after his break-up with Carla. Just as I did when the same happened with myself and Dolores. We had much more in common and he even became my roommate in the early '80s following that episode.

We decided to get an apartment once the house I'd bought sold. The deal was that I put up the deposit and the first month's rent, while he actually paid the rent himself. I was able to store some of my stuff in the extra bedroom in his place in El Sobrante. He HAD been rooming in one of the spots in the house which went on the market and helped finance the deposit on the apartment.

So this worked out fine for two years. Then I came up and took my stuff down to where I was living in Oxnard in a rented van. He had become one of the apartment complex's regulars at the spa and was always a Raiders fan. It was his great thing to talk about their kicker, Chris Bahr, who was a regular in the spa as well.

He participated in the woodchucking business that Bro Tim and I started out of the house in El Sobrante. We three, plus my brother-in-law Marc, and Carrol Holthaus, a climber I'd known for sometime due to his patronage of the North Face shops, plus his GF Natasha and her boy. All of us, plus another climber dude, a friend of Carrol's and who I once picked up hitching to the Valley named Scott Something found a space on the sofa on occasion, occupied the house at its peak and all of us did some work towards getting the business going. It was crazy times, fueled by lots of beer and Ozark Mule weed.

Shinin' times.

There's a lot more I could say, but as Feav was fond of saying, "Mouse, give it a rest."
The next round's on me, bud. Seven & Seven, right?
1974 at my dad's 50th birthday party.
