Ammon, you have deeper problems than just going to court for this case. Alcohol, honesty, caring for others, ETC.
So which of the five are you still not guilty of? Would be ridiculous to drop the BASE jump charge.
Still claiming “I did nothing wrong”. By official accounts, that is not true. There is a history of being caught and not facing the music. Same with the DUI “I did nothing wrong”. Yet, speeding along and drunk. Kept saying “I did nothing wrong” till you signed the line, “I am guilty”.
How many other crimes have you not done? I have only looked Yosemite criminal records.

Well said. You do put into words an experience that truly is unique and beautiful. You put a perspective that similar to climbing BASE is a way of life.
You were at the inception of the sport today known as BASE jumping. It's a honor to read the history and views you shared in your "long" post.

When I first posted on this thread I was utterly pissed off.
I thought about it quite a bit and realized that this is not a good feeling. There is some wisdom in the words of getting struck in the right cheek and then presenting your left.
The law loves a bad guy. They do not want a martyr.
El Cap is not the best jump in the world. No way. However, it may be the most beautiful. I dunno. There are so many now. So if you are a surfer, and the best wave on Earth is off limits, are you going to snap to and salute? Well, sure, if the reason makes any sense. If it is just a dumb law, then no way. You are gonna hit that wave and surf all night, coppers be damned.
That is kind of the way it is, I think. People were quitting their real jobs and becoming dirtbag jumpers 25 years ago. Now there is quite a crowd. They are much better schooled and have much better gear.
But that wave is still just sitting there. It is kind of like a tree falling in the forest for nobody to hear. Well, it gets done and nobody hears, unless there is a bust. Or you get woken up out of your sweet dreams in your ledge. I sure wish it was quieter. You don't really notice it when you are doing it.
But the epicenter is nowhere near Yosemite anymore.
And hey. I am going to try to stop getting pissed off so much in the future. No kidding.
I have so many amazing jumping stories. I just can't tell them. It is kind of a weird position to be in. You have all of the wild characters just like Camp 4 used to have.

I just saw this, then the 1000 posts and had to laugh. He got popped fair and square. Yeah, sucks that jumping isn't legal, but that's pretty darn well established (since the 70's?).
Perhaps with all that adrenaline going after an el cap jump, someone might have been a little brusque with the po po and got to ride the lightning?
Tuan's page has a good article about why base jumping was outlawed. The hang gliding community ruined it for the rest of us long ago.

Before I leave...hopefully for life...
Let me make a suggestion.
Go rent the movie "Gandhi." I hadn't seen it since I was a punk.
Then turn on the news and watch the channels for a few hours.
Then throw away your TV. The truth is almost impossible to find, other than through your own eyes.
I am splitting in a few days to go decompress from two years of non-stop geology work. Got a cabin to hang in with no water or anything for as long as I want. Up at 10,000 feet, so I should get some snow on my aging head.
The colors are turning. Hey. This thread really is a waste of time!! I think I am gonna read the Gita. Never read that one.
