Chief, let's make this simple:

1. What are some of the units of volume?
2. Are tons a measure of volume?
3. If you do choose to use tons as a stand-in for units of volume, what other piece of information is required for an accurate conversion?

The weight of anything that floats is equal to the weight of the water it displaces.

Density has nothing to do with it, Chief, cuz the both the ship and ice are floating.

Keep working on understanding simple concepts like volume vs area before moving on to stuff more complicated.

Wow, so a carrier is a "solid body"? How do they fit people inside?

Here's the bottom line Chief: He asked you what area is displaced. It's kind of a trick question because displacement is typically quoted in a volumetric unit of measure. However, knowing the weight of the object, you know how much weight of liquid it will displace, and knowing the density of the liquid, we can back-calculate a volume.

But again, volume is not area.

The surface area of a container for a specific volume will vary with the shape of said container. You can do some simple calculus equations to solve for what is the shape requiring the least surface area for a given volume (it's a sphere, btw)

I'm not a scientist / engineer but do work with regulated industries. Thus, I can say thus:

On the business side, no one really contests climate change. Even if they do, they are dealing with regulation and/or public perception and have moved on. Even in the unlikely event he is correct, nobody actually cares what the chief has to say.

Yeah ok chief, you are correct

the word "record" heat should not have been used

but that is quite essentially irrelevant, and of course does nothing to diminish my point

and that point is that, just like last summer when heat RECORDS across the grain belt were indeed set, this summer is turning out to be a replay, although, so far, only a couple degrees short of being called record heat

it's not about localized weather, or whether a particular heat record is set and continually rebroken

it is about the "trend", undeniable, unmistakable global warming

of that, the flat earth society has been silenced

what remains is only conversation as to whether or not we humans both should and can, do anything to mitigate what is clearly happening

Well Ed,your estimation of the extent of what i know and my concern for the future is, as usual for you, dead wrong. As a father of three, and hopefully someday soon a grandfather of many more, i am keenly concerned for the future. As the patriarch of my little clan i bare responsibility for their future. This issue, probably more than any other prominent current issue, poses a danger to the tribe, but not for the reason's you are shamelessly promoting. Long ago i determined that the odds of CAGW effects posing a threat for the future well being of my descendants is near zero. However there is a very real mortal threat associated with this issue; it is that those pushing the measures to mitigate this non threat will succeed thereby needlessly subjecting future generations to indentured servitude without the freedoms we have enjoyed and with greatly diminished opportunity. And for what- to satisfy the ego's and the greed of a limited few? If these guys get their way we face an economic calamity of proportions much larger than we have witnessed in modern times. Perhaps a new Dark Ages. At that point, with seven billion plus people, you would see "real environmental catastrophe".

I'm pretty good at figuring people out. What i know of you Ed, is that your belief in the catastrophe's some of the more outspoken are bullhorning about is very thin. At the same time i also know, by deduction, that your allegiance is more towards your fellow scientists, that you have spent a lifetime around, than the general public or even your fellow supertopians. Perhaps you have no children. Everything you have accomplished is of your own making. You worked hard, put yourself through many years of schooling while doing without and dirtbagging it to make ends meet, you are now a senior scientist in charge of a brigade of some older scientists but mainly those still a bit wet behind the ears. You fear the backlash for all scientists if this "climate science" collapses in the denunciation and scorn it deserves.

You Ed, should study some real world economics. If you did, and could understand it, you would see that science will suffer immeasurably if the CAGW scam policies are put in place.

Say, in thirty years from now i encounter you on a upper senior type of trail, and say we are all feeling the ill effects of "climate science economic policy", well i think i would take my cane and hit you over the head.

You are too intelligent to continue supporting this CAGW sham.

are you sure that pic isn't a pic of the chief beginning his exercise routine?? I sure hope you get in shape Chief because that is an embarrassing fitness level for any navy man let alone a Chief to be in...where is your discipline??? push yourself away from the buffet...there are people who eat less in a week than what you consume to maintain that girth...BTW is girth a measure of volume or area??
