Continue on the trail, just past Seminar Wall on the right and you'll find this desperate mess/groove of Dudley's aka Lizard Crack, 5.11d...

Uhemm....you Rubidoux folk...seems face/slab climbing is your forte,' but you're on Woodson, Mt. Woodson, crack climbing mecca, known for it's classic cracks. Johnny, you ever get back to California Night? I always was taught to be well-rounded in my climbing (poke, poke, jab, jab).

This always reminded me of something right out of Joshua Tree. A fairly bold highball with a bad landing...even for today's "pad people" (gosh, I love that phrase)!...

Creativity, style and power is required from the beginning on this unique problem which Eppi contrasts here on a bold, ropeless ascent of The Cave, 5.11 (circa 80's)...

...eliminating the "Captains Chair" creates a more fluid, uninterrupted problem that forces you to climb with efficiency.

Illusiondweller,

cool photos! Having done Left Long's a couple times on a rope, I've always felt it to be harder than The Chube, near Gunsmoke, in Joshua Tree (similar style of climb). Thing is, isn't The Chube like V2? wouldn't that make it like 5.11? Anyway, grades don't really mean anything, but I think Left Long's is definitely a touch harder.

that pic of mike was taken in '77. i'm just out of the frame below him. forget the exact brand of smokes but they were these fancy british dimps that came in a nice box. we were smoking those things and galouise french dimps, to be more like don whillans.

i couldn't do the tv screen last month. damn.

'dweller - I'm not sure I'd call those guys the Rubidoux crew, although they have and do boulder there. It's probably more accurate to call them the "boulder/climb anywhere it's good" crew. Lately it seems they've been at Woodson a lot. Lucky turkeys.

Not sure there's really a core Rubidoux group anymore like there was, although it's still fun to try playing that trump card. Did a few Woodson cracks, still hope to do a few more.

bvb - another opportunity coming up soon. all things pass.

Edit - so Donnys post makes sense. I moved the question about the background to a post one or two down. He was too fast for me.

Anybody see much difference in the background of that circa '77 picture? Although I guess you can't really see much of the surrounding valley. Bet there was a big diff between the housing then and now. I think I first came down there around '74, but don't remember much about things like that though.

I do remember driving down on the old 395, what a pita. And going through Escondido to get there.

Henny, there aren't any real rubideux climbers. You guys were just misplaced woodson hopefuls.
