When we were getting our pre-launch ranger pep-talk on Idaho's Main Salmon River in 2002: he mentioned there had been three black bear attacks on boaters the previous week, on the nearby Middle Fork Salmon.
After the trip, I went looking for news stories on the attacks. I found reports on one, where a rafter sleeping outside had a black bear bite his foot. I discovered another had been a more serious incident on a side creek, and could never get more info on that one.
The third and most serious attack was finally reported in a PA newspaper.
One of the scarier bear attack stories I've read.
It never showed up in an Idaho newspaper. Bear attack stories discourage tourists you know.
Since the newspaper seems to be very jealous about their copyright: here's the link.

From time to time I hear rumors of a small population of Grizzlies in the very remote Tehipite Valley and Blue Canyon areas of the Sierra. I have a very level headed friend who says he has seen them. Anyone else??
