May 19. The Gas Mart is open and in full swing. Watch for good bands this summer at the Mart.

Check out the webcam at the pass - they are already plowing - Nita, what are you willing to bet since you put the "real bet" challange on the table? The pass was not cleared this early last year so I agree, it could be closer to end of May than June.

OOOPs - did nothave time to get through all 64 posts so it looks like someone already has the webcam info posted - cannot wait to get up there!

latest report from the Tuolumne Backcountry ranger:

April 30, 2008
(Last report of the year)

Weather: (April 24 to April 30)
High temp: 62°F (April 27, 28)
Low temp: 18°F (April 25)
New Snow: none
Total settled snow depth: 6 inches as of April 30

Ski Conditions and Weather: This will be the last winter report this spring as ski season is quickly drawing to a close. The snow is melting quickly--there are large patches of ground opening up in the meadows, many long stretches of bare pavement along the Tioga Road, and the snowplows are quickly closing in from both sides.

The park plows are near Tenaya Lake, heading east. There is no estimate yet for the opening date of the Tioga Road. For the most current Tioga Road status call 209-372-0200 or go to http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm Caltrans has plowed to the park boundary at Tioga Pass, but the road is still closed at the bottom of the grade outside Lee Vining; it is unknown exactly when they will open the road to the public. You can check the status of that portion of Highway 120 at 800/427-7623 or http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi.

I have just been advised that the lower gate will be opened this afternoon (5/1/08) so the road will be available to the Park entrance.

They were last reported to be at Pywiack Dome and they may be in TM by now. There is still lots of work for them to do so who knows, maybe 2 weeks?

Arrived back at TPR last night, after driving through an open gate! Yeah to be back.

Shooting for Memorial weekend opening.

We are in need of an experienced line cook. If you can make perfect over medium eggs, stop on by.

There is still some good skiing to be had.

Eric! the Saddlebag Rd is still under snow, it will probably be closed until Memorial weekend or later.

TPR needs help with the web site. Come talk to us!

Saddlebag will not open until after Memorial Day. Keep in mind it sits at 10,000 feet and usually accumulates a LOT of snow around the building. Don't hold your breath on that one for at least another month, if not 45 days.

Ah, yes, the Saddlebag area... what a stunning little treasure.

Here is Conness Creek on the walk out after a fine day on North Peak a few Augusts back:

It doesn't get much better than this.

Thanks to all for the pics of the past few days. Tioga Pass and SaddleBag are indeed special. This hiker/scrambler from Indiana gleans the webcams several times daily for glimpses of these areas and the first-hand accounts are great! I usually make a couple of trips per summer out to the Yosemite back country and am continually adding red line and peaks to my topo map.
I agree the Conness Lakes area below North Peak is quite a place. If you work your way on north there is a little shute that takes you down to Upper McCabe then up to Roosevelt L. and on out via Conness or on to T.M.

Keep the news coming there are people 2,000 mile away waiting to hear it!

An of you folks who work in Tuolumne have to report for duty this weekend? Set up tents, cover the store, clean off the grille? Drive up on the freshly plowed road? E
