It's a big tent over there. There's a lot of good and a lot of bad. It's easy to point out rc.com's failings. Who cares? You'll find suckage anywhere. You'll also find some really fun bullshitting, trip reports, regional community discussions, and technical discussions. For many of us, it's helpful. I'd even go so far as to help them in a small way to stay on their feet for a while.

Skib - I don't know any of your backstory except that I heard your prudishness got one of the more fun threads there shut down. Anyone (and you are not alone) who's interested in f*#king up the fun stuff that happens there earns my irritation.

Sure, someday the garbage and poor decisions may overwhelm the site and bring it down for the last time. Until then, I'm glad it's around - it provides *plenty* of worthwhile pitches amongst the choss.

I have only visited the site a handful or so times, though I did register about the same time I joined this forum. I can’t recall my username, I think it is Paddy.

Mick Ryan is right, ukclimbing.com is pretty good, so is in fact climbing.ie for Ireland.

“you have people writing trip report about a visit to a gym” - WTF, you are joking, right?

Mac, I get it, more tongue in cheek than an actual trip report I guess.

I remember when Reardon stepped down. Just before that was really seeming to have a big increase in loading/error messages/availability. I wrote a thread in the "suggestions" forum about how crappy the site was and that they were in jeopardy of losing viewers. It was just an attempt at a humorous rant, mixed with a "WTF???" message.

But anyway, a little later Reardon stepped down, but apparently the post I made gave him the impetus to suggest to those after him that I might be a candidate for some sort of PR/Events Coordinator sort of job. (Now that I write this, maybe it was his idea of a funny payback, if I would have been egotistical enough to have accepted the offer.....).

So, I got contacted about this sort of position, and I the things that entered my head were:
I am not qualified to be a liason like this
It might be cool to be this sort of liason: I wonder if the person who does do it will have any better qualifications
There wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that I would set foot in the volunteers/management malaise that was RC.com. Even completely from the outside, it was clear that there was no cohesive communication from within, and that some of the mods had absurdly strange control issues, and they also had zero to little sense in how to operate as part of a team or as representatives for an establishment.

I sent a reply that I had many questions as to the organizational hierarchy, and also my concern about the poorly trained representatives for rc. It was probably a good thing that nothing ever came of it, because even though I KNEW it would have been a bad decision to join in, I was interested in being a part of the community in the capacity that was briefly outlined.

Not that I have to but I will defend Martha and the work she did as a volunteer at RC.com. A lot of the HARD working volunteers were left out in the dark and were never really thanked for their hard work trying to make the site better.

The site needs a lot of help and maybe will go in the right direction with the new owners. Who knows? What I do know is that Martha put in a lot of personal hours in trying to make the site a better place and left do to lack of direction, burn out and wanting to move on.

The internet can be a vile place. A place of wankers and wanna-be's. I know Martha on a personal level and think that she is a great lady.
