"No need to get muddled down in personal attacks."

When I said rapping rather than jugging I was making an allusion to there being a special place in Hell for those who speak ill of the dead.

Its hard to have an "interesting debate" when the participants aren't even on the same page...

That's very funny. Point taken. You have a good sense of irony. Alright, I'm moving on to other issues (not at all disimilar).

Nic -- excellent to hear you got most of your stuff back. I'm pissed that it happened at all.

I think it's time for a stake-out and some good ol fashioned frontier justice. It's a damn shame guns are illegal in National Parks. Guess we'd have to settle for a bludgeoning.

LOL
(never considered THAT)

Ed,
with them being illegal it makes the depths of his immersion into crap THAT much more convincing for a captured gear thief.
A little field trip to a remote location, a discussion of Hammurabic justice, a tightly bound wrist to staunch blood flow prior to a proposed amputation, maybe firing up a small chainsaw...
Then you get to see how fast he can run with a load in his drawers.

So, I was just talking to Nick. He said that when he came back to get his gear a ranger had left a note asking about where he was staying and that the lockers are for food only.

Nick went to the rangers and asked for his gear back and they told him they didn't take it. So, he put a note up on the board and it was answered by someone in C4. When Nick went to go get his gear the guy was wasted and could barely talk. Nick wanted to get the hell out of there because the guy was acting really weird and they were the only ones in C4, at the time. He high-tailed it out of there without checking his belongings. By the time he checked his haulbag and found some of the gear was missing the guy was already gone.

Nick said he was pretty sure he wasn't a climber.

BTW, I got my car broken into by a bear last Fall. Yep, my fault I left a couple of energy bars in my haulbag. Anyway, the bear must have dragged the haulbag off because it came up missing. It also had my ascenders, aiders and a few other odd pieces of gear in it. It was a grade VI, Blackdiamond, white haulbag. If anyone knows anything about it I would give some kind of reward for returning it.

Most people say they would love to walk up on a thief with there hands on their gear.... I don't think I would be so happy about it, I would probably end up in Jail for kicking the sh#t of someone.

What did Nick not get back?

He said he got all of his cams back but jumars, daisies and aiders were missing.

I would really like to think that climbers would never steal from each other but I guess there are some messed up people out there.

Yeah, but the idea is make sure there are no other witnesses (just you and yer buddies) and then beat the person to your satisfaction. How do you keep him from talking? After you're done beating him, you drag him into the woods, strip him to his skivies, tie him to a tree, slather him in honey, and tie a t-bone around his neck. Then disappear for a few hours. Explain, upon returning, that next time no one will be coming back to save his ass if he mentions a word about the incidents of that afternoon to anyone. If bear #46 happens to be molesting the perp and passionately gnawing at the t-bone around his neck when you return -- so be it. If the bear has gone beyond molestation and the t-bone is gone and #46 is working her way through his vital organs -- stick around to make sure she finishes the job and leaves no evidence.

Yeah, I know...I have waaaay too much time on my hands.

It'd be cool if the Park Service/Rangers wanted to help out here. It'd be pretty easy to set up some lockers in C4 that they could rent from the keiosk, complete with lock. If you had to use their lock, they would have a master key if somebody overstayed their rent of the locker. Really, it wouldn't be hard to figure something out.

But to not be able to safely store stuff in a walk-in campground, that's oversight.

Ammon, do you really think it was the powerbars in your haul bag that got the bear's interest?

i had the back door of a campershell torn off by a bear in TM going for about 1/2 pound of dry pasta that we'd missed when we cleaned the car out. 3 other cars in the lot were broken into also, and the one next to my truck had a few power bar wrappers strewn alongside it (emptied of bar by the bear(s)).

those f*#kers can smell.

There was a golden bear wandering the base of El Cap last June, terrorizing hikers, stealing food and puncturing water bottles.

The start of New Dawn is a bolt at the far left edge of a ledge that gets thinner and thinner and then disappears. By the time you're at the start of the route, you've got 60 or 80 feet of air above a 5.10 slab. We were thinking of hanging some smelly food there to attract Yogi. He would've had to decide between not getting the food, or moving out onto the slab and risking a whipper.

I was thinking maybe the original Yosemite residents used to do this sort of thing to hunt bears.
