Yeah ....

Just look at today's "thinkers".

Sample some of the threads and responses on this forum.

Like for instance: "Why are those SuperTopo-ians so wrong on everything? (OT)"

No wonder these people can't solve any problems.

Yowzzz!!!! duck and cover

Re: NASA. Trying to justify a program by its spinoffs means that the basic purpose of the program can't be fully justified. Proponents of NASA and military spending have used the spinoff argument for a long time, never convincingly. Solar energy research has benefited a lot more from direct investment through DOE and through solar investment tax credits.

Re: population increases. Investments in the education of girls have had the biggest effect on reducing population growth. Population is going to peak in the next 40 years. The question is where: 8 billion or 12 billion?

This is interesting, yet disturbing, yet intriguing.

I don't know what to make of it.

I listened to more of this last night also. Definitely brings to mind many Sci-fi books and movies. Brave New World, Altered Carbon, The Matrix...

Not really. It's just that the return on investment (ROI) goes beyond exploration. There IS a very consumer-based ROI that has benefited everybody - beyond the general advances in space exploration and knowledge of the universe.

You gotta have vision, man.....

The space program produced hundreds of products, devices & materials that benefitted the average american. It expanded every scientific discipline and created many new ones. There is a strong argument that it was money very well spent.

The disappearing door thing is pretty cool. Imagine that car with burners or anti-gravity boosters and you have the Jetsons.

I think that link to NPR is of an older story because Singularity: Is it near is now a movie.

Date: 15th century

1 : a mean, unprincipled, or dishonest person
2 : a mischievous person or animal

— rascal adjective

--

I'm so not a rascal.

And I don't want to live forever in this life, yea. If there's an after life, hopefully it's more enlightened and less materialistic and filled with greed and suffering. You gotta die eventually, and you don't get to take your rack to the grave...

I hope there are 72 virgins. Who WOULDN'T want 72 virgins?

Blue,

You must not like virgins.

How many ladies here would love to have 72 male virgin chippendale dancers

Here's a few ideas:

1. Term limits for EVERY political office. Many voters were happy that Bush could only serve eight years, many voters are happy that Obama will only get 4 or 8 years. Many wish that Pelosi and Reid would go away. Same on the Repub side. A great way to at least give new ideas a chance.

2. Judge people by their ideas and actions, not by whether they are "red" or "Blue." Listen first, judge later. Listen to the people you can hardly stand listening to...like Glenn Beck, Hannity, Keith Obermann, and Rachel Maddow. Try to understand the opposite point of view - it doesn't mean you agree with it, but if you don't understand it, how can you honestly say it's "bad" and you oppose it?

3. Happiegirl has it exactly right. Change the things you can change - like the way you live your life, consume, and interact with others. No new technology or new laws required here, just an open mind and a willingness to change.

I disagree that everyone should learn about "peak oil." Everyone should be required to take:
1. Personal finance and money management.
2. Economics.

If people understood personal finance, there would be no economic meltdown, foreclosures, etc.

If people understood economics, they'd understand big oil, why "renewable" energy isn't more prolific (economics, not "big oil" conspiracy), and why things happen or don't happen in the world.

P.S. - While we are being selfish by climbing instead of contributing to society, there are intelligent, hard working people trying to solve the problems of the world!
