Fogarty, I'm thinking if you hiked up over that col above your left shoulder that you would arrive at a very high lake - that right?

In the mid eighties I worked on a project in the Golden Trout Wilderness. We had a contract to build fish barriers as part of an anti-hybridization project.

I haven't returned to that area since '86. I'm wondering if the project was successful. Does anyone here have any info on Golden Trout in that area. I'm not looking for any specific locations, just general info about pure Golden Trout. Hopefully non-native trout haven't been able to get over our barriers.

Of course all it takes is for one naughty person with a bucket of invasive fish to ruin the whole project.

Some great pictures above, such beautiful fish.

My son Adam caught a Golden in the lakes below Conness when he was 12. Little feller was about 8" long and we admired it greatly and put it back. Didn't want to hold it out of the water long enough to dig out the camera for a pic.
A couple of years later I ran into a fish wildlife ecologist. He told me the "native" Sierra Goldens were fished to extinction. But luckily USFWS had hatched a large number and exported them to the Rockies. Perhaps including the Wind Rivers? When they went extinct in CA, they imported them back. He also said the Sierra variety seldom gets above 8 - 10"

Can anyone elaborate on this history?

Spectacularly beautiful little fish.

Some nice fish pictures!
Never fished for Goldens.
I used to be a spin casting, treble hook dragging trout murderer and still love the taste of fresh trout.
I'm better educated now and understand the plight of our anadromous friends.
Don't remember when I last murdered a trout, not sure if I could unless I was starving.
Seeing pictures of dead trout makes me sad now.

Harass them if you must but pet em on the head and let em go.

Fogarty, what's interesting is we were at the other large lake in the same basin in 2007 and the fishing was unremarkable - everything may have changed up a bit since your youth

As noted, I plan on taking my 12 year son this summer on this trip, I'm suprised at how small some of the fish are in the posts, it' been 29 years since last at this spot, are the true Goldens now scarce?

Yeah all you folks with your massive daily kills have fished 'em out.
