I’m with Dingus on this one. Some reverse psychology here. No one could make that OP with a straight face.

But the whole area of legends and celebrity has gone off the charts in this country. Let me ask you, seriously.

What do you suppose would happen if someone had walked up to Don Whillans and asked him how it feels to be a living legend?

It wouldna be pretty.

Shall we consider what a life really is? It is a hopefully extended process in which you get up each morning and try to do something that interests you that day. That’s it. That’s pretty much it. That’s what everyone is doing. But there is more.

If Joe is doing something I find really interesting, then that is just as much a part of my life as my other interests. So there you have it.

Layton Kor is a part of the lives of a whole bunch of people.

If we handle it intelligently that is all to the good. If we don’t handle it intelligently Layton no longer has the freedom to just go down to Ralph’s when he needs toilet paper.

That’s a bummer.

A real bummer.

Oh, and on a more serious note.

What do you think about changing our health care system around a bit?

Hate to say it, but I'm with HK (above) about what some people will post.

And if that guy is really the same as FUNGUY over on mp.com, then I have yet to see him post anything that didn't seem negative or downer.

jstan,

I guess the joke was that any Whillans story had the same ending;

"So I 'it 'im!"

Guess thats why they call it a punchline.

I had a talk with Layton since my last post, and it appears that he has been engaged in all sorts of enterprises as he anticipates burgeoning medical expense.
I know that (most) people MEAN well in approaching him with these ideas but, while I can't hold a candle to him as a climber, as a far more savvy business person AND his manager they should be coming to me.
The latest involves print signing and the perps are not doing it for any percentage but still, it should be made part of an overall strategy instead of doing things piecemeal.
I don't want Layton diluting the value of his signature by autographing just anything.

C'mon folks, I'm trying to do what will provide the best results.
I've lost far too many partners already and would like to keep him and a few others around for as long as possible.

I'd pay to see a Layton show. I'd pay to see the OP get a slight beating in the back lot. I'm a bad man.

Patrick, if you're willing to travel you have a chance.

As far as the OP goes, hopefully it was a troll, but a beating?
Pity for lack of understanding and compassion perhaps.

As one of Layton's longtime friends (I first climbed with him in 1963), I can assure you that no one is more surprised or grateful than Layton that people will pay to hear him speak. He was the least pretentious person in the climbing world at the height of his career and still is. He was also the most generous ever in sharing his time and expertise with novice climbers like myself. It's a pity that some of the younger members of our community can't see fit to reciprocate his generosity of spirit.

As for Layton being a recluse, the years he disappeared from the climbing world were spent in remote areas of the tropics, diving and participating in the local cultures. Unlike many past their physical prime, he didn't cling to the past but moved on to other challenges. Now after a very full life, why wouldn't he come back to his original friends and community?

Hopefully Cam Burns will soon finish the bio of Layton that he's writing, so everyone can see what he's been up to and have another way to contribute to his increasing medical costs. By the way, Layton is facing his health problems like he did everything else in life, with courage and a wonderful sense of humor.

Yeah, Jim, sometimes I think how lucky those folks are in Ft
Collins, to have such a reasonable drive to Vedauwoo...

I don't want to get into some rivalry thing, obviously there are
many reasons Colorado is a good place to live, but when it comes
to arguing the climbing potential...I never adequately exploit
the potential of any place I live, being too lazy.

But I don't get any opportunities to hear Layton Kor speak here
in California, at all, no way around it.

Jan hit the nail on the head. He obviously knows Layton well.
I should have addressed that "recluse" crack.

I know that people all over would like to see his show, but the logistics are so daunting that I would humbly suggest that it would be better if THEY were willing to travel in order to catch it.
In order to make a show possible it nearly has to be guaranteed successful because of attendant support considerations.

THATS why Layton has set up multiple shows at the Front Range.

If local climbing groups can unify enough to provide sufficient resources and support I encourage them to email me and I shall endeavor to schedule a show.

The original post was so stupid and over the top that I assumed that it was a joke.
Looks like Onyx Is, that stupid; As dense and cryptocrystaline as the mineral whose name he ingratiated himself with.
