Apparently, it's my grasp on reality that's smokin! Good luck in whatever alternative you are trying. Maybe you could have an oil slick smoothie, I hear they are good for your colon, or something like that.
AS KATRINA OIL SPILLS MOUNT, CONGRESS CALLS FOR MORE COASTAL DRILLING
Six Million Gallons Pour Out So Far, Ranking Among Largest U.S. Oil Accidents
NEW YORK (September 15, 2005) -- Nearly six million gallons of oil pouring out of seven pipelines and coastal storage tanks ruptured by Hurricane Katrina amount to one of the largest U.S. oil spills in history. Yet despite this disaster-within-a-disaster, lawmakers in Washington are saying we should open up vast new areas of our nation's shoreline to more coastal oil drilling, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
"These spills should be a clear reminder of the inevitable risks that come with coastal drilling, especially in areas prone to hurricanes and tropical storms," said Lisa Speer, senior policy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council and an expert on marine environments. "Katrina is a giant warning sign for anyone thinking about coastal oil production in their area."
Suggesting that soaring energy prices might be Katrina's "silver lining," Texas Republican Congressman Joe Barton told reporters last week that "we could be drilling off the coasts of several other states."
The Coast Guard estimates more than 7 million gallons of oil were spilled from industrial plants, storage depots and other facilities around southeast Louisiana.
That is about two-thirds as much oil as spilled from the Exxon Valdez tanker in 1989. But unlike the oil from the Valdez, which poured from a single source, these oil spills are scattered at sites throughout southeast Louisiana.

Oil, Water, Fish and Wildlfe, this is not a good mix.
Obviously, oil is an important part of our lives. Eventually they will drill and suck the living life out of this planet if we let the oil men have their way.
Alternative fuels, engines, and power sources seem to be important to both candidates, but only the democratic party.
What gives with that?

We could have already been "Energy Independant" if Ron Reagan hadn't scuttled SERI and the green alternatives in favor of handing "Big Oil" their wet dream.
So instead of moving forcefully in a new direction, like many European nations and Iceland has, the frightened, shortsighted, little minds want to maintain the devastating status quo of un sustainability.
Priceless.
Historically every civilazation that has become dependant on any single commodity has failed. Diversify or die!

*Energy Independent* is no good if it isn't cheaper than the alternative.
When was the last time anything Made In America cost less than the same thing made by foriegners?

Not true. I'd argue points here but trusting anyone who cares to give it some real thought why something expensive in the beginning becomes security and cost effective in the end.

Over the next decade plus, we will go through much change relative to the energy crisis. None of the efforts will rapidly improve the situation. We will drill for more oil, build nukes, expand solar and wind farms. We will also utilize more of our coal resources while improving the technology. We will do this out of necessity. Even with all the efforts to expand various technologies, increasing population/demand will require that "all" methods of energy production will be developed.
This will be done because not to do so would result in economic collapse. Even now, polls show the voters moving in the direction of more drilling; and the environmental movement is beginning to divide on the issue of nuke development.
Practical realities will dictate what's to be done. The public will demand it, and the politicians will follow along.

Does anyone besides politicians, oil companies and Rush Limbaugh actually belive that more drilling is the solution to our short or long term energy needs?
Scientists? Economists? Energy experts?
I don't really have a problem with some additional extraction if it's part of a bridge to a long term soulution. I don't hear anyone talking about that though.
Instead, another all we have is another brain-dead, knee-jerk reacion from our prez. This country needs a real leader.

I was driving through NV, ID, and UT 4-6 weeks ago, and the "conservative" talk shows were all pushing the identical agenda at the same time - "drill for oil!"
Big oil buys off the GOP, the talk shows play along (direct money from oil or just toeing the party line), and we get this push to "drill for oil" off the coast - which is actually a push to increase subsidies to the oil industry.
The oil companies are already on welfare, and their subsidies are in the crosshairs. The best defense is a good offense - so they spend a little cash and get the GOP and talk shows to push for "more oil drilling" - it's a wise investment on their part.
Sucker "conservatives" will then clamor for more big government subsidies to big oil.
Pretty sad when the liberals are the ones trying to keep government spending down.
What does more oil drilling mean for me? No change in gas prices, and a lot more tax money going to big oil over the next decades. No thanks.

HAHA record profits AGAIN!!!
But the poor oil companies are hurting so bad, they have to have those subsidies. Yep.
Welfare for the rich, welfare for big business, YES! VOTE REPUGNICANT, SCREW THE LITTLE GUY!
God forbid we actually did make a big effort to bring cost of solar down down down and everyone could own their own power source. No money for fat cats in that, nosiree.

My oil stock dividends are doing quite well, thank you. My retirement program is invested in oil stocks as are many such programs. Further, I'm preparing to invest in solar and wind. I have some of Picken's Mesa (wind) already and will be buying more. It's called Capitalism you twits. While many of you whine, froth and beat your pathetic and empty heads against the ground railing against the system in your delusional paranoia, I and millions of others are going to be making bucks. Rant on children; it's amusing.

It won't change gas prices. That is what the Republicans want to deceive people into thinking.
On the overhand, I see no reason not do it unless there are overwhelming environmental concerns. The bottom line is that someday, it's ALL going to be drilled as the resource continues to get more scarce.
edit:
Come on Woody... don't you realize you have a glorious chance to have your cake (oil stocks etc) and eat it too (ranting about current institutions, Capitalism etc)?* :-)
*The game is rigged, but if you don't play you can't win.
The hypocrisy is pretty tiresome. We are ALL invested in the system. That is why I hate seeing Republicans bringing up a minor issue like this and trumpeting it as the cause of all our woes... It's completely dishonest.

One thing I know for sure, there WILL be drilling off the coast of Florida.
It's only a question of if we will do it ourselves, properly supervised, or if the Chinese and Cuba do it and then sell our oil back to us.

Politics as usual from the oil/war mongers. Use the fear of high gas prices to push the oil company agenda to drill for more oil which will turn more record profits and make more dividend pay outs for the politicians. F$#k the peons paying at the pump, f$#k forsight, f#@k the fish, rally the masses and drill drill drill.
Record profits for any us company in history announced by big oil this week. Hellooooooo?
