No kidding. Quite of few of the people in the audience were sniffling and crying, we were alternately bored and snickering.

If we’re into rentals, then hands down Pink Flamingos. My condolances if you saw this at a theater and had to exchange looks with another live human being.
So I’m telling a coworker about Something About Mary - the hair product scene - I can’t give it away, but I’m trying to warn him - he’s like “Is it worse than anything in Pink Flamingos?” I didn’t know so I rented it sometime later - never discussed it with him.

A Boy And His Dog. After 5 or 10 minutes La Femme thought it was gonna turn out
badly for the girl.
I think Harlan wanted to give the dog the last line, criticizing the meal: "you never did have good taste in women..."
I groaned, but I made it through the whole movie...

I didn't think a Boy and his Dog was that Bad. Certainly no worse than a lot of other 70s sci fi.
And Dead Ringers is well-done horror. As is much of Cronenberg's other work. The subject of Dead Ringers is pretty horrible, as is the imagery, but it's well done.
As far as grueling films that I didn't walk out of...had to watch Shoah for a college class. 9 hours of interviews with Holocaust survivors, split over two nights. Rough going, and not sure I could/would do it again, but it was worth it.

Glengarry Glen Ross. Another walk-out I just remembered.
Horrible version of "Death of a Salesman" with a great cast.
The very first time I learned not to trust a movie because of it's "great cast".
It wasn't the last, but the tarnish was on.

hey there say, ... hmmmm... ohmy, i do not go to watch them... thus, never have to take that time to walk out on them...
:)
i read up and decided very careful, as to what i may want to see on dvd, though, and have only purchased older year, stuff, from way on back...
:)
well, perhaps a few new ones, but not many... :)
time is precious... quality, and teaching, is what i go for...
and, stories, that really do some good...

Saving Private Ryan.
I went with my Father, a WWII vet who was first wave onto the beach twice in the Pacific theater. I could tell he was getting uncomfortable as the men boarded the landing raft. When the shooting started he grabbed me by the arm and said "I'm out of here."
I routinely show that movie to young people who might think war is cool.
Seems to work.

"Andy Warhol's Frankenstein" is a movie so bad and so disgusting it should be illegal. Walked out during the decapitations scene before the head hit the floor. Sick, sick stuff.

The Big Lebowski.
I love the Cohen brother's movies but this one just didn't do it for me. It became such a cult favorite that I eventually rented it and suffered through the whole thing. Felt like I was back in 7th grade or something. How this endures is beyond me. Watching someone peeing on the carpet is just not funny.

Dumb and Dumber was worth watching in the company of an 8 and a 10 year old.

Peter O'Toole as the T.E. Lawrence character was maybe the single worst "critically acclaimed" performance I've suffered through
HA! I said the same thing! My parents thought that was the best movie on Earth. Nice scenery though...

Number 5 on the 100 greatest films list (7 on the updated list).
You guys are way off. It made stars of O'Toole as well as an Egyptian B movie actor with a highly specialized skill. Omar Sharif knew how to ride camels.
Sharif had a little problem though; after working for over a year on his next Lean film he blew his paycheck in one night of gambling.
