My opinion of Win 10 is going down. It has been mega-unstable the last few weeks. Well, not the actual system but Edge which got so bad I went back to Exploder which is just as bad. I had been postponing the latest update but The Wife accidently triggered it today and it has been almost an hour now and it's not even close to finishing! Of course, she took the day off to do some work related stuff do it's her own fault, which is of little solace cause now she, me, AND the puter are grumpy!

I'm still waiting

Should I go to 10, or stay on the old system?

So the update FINALLY 'appears' to be almost done when the scary thought occurred:

Maybe Fancy Bear just finished my 'update'?

Microsoft has admitted that their intention is to move away from software as a product, and towards software as a service (i.e. "cloud computing"). Windows 10 has been promoted, and given away for "free" as a means of expediting the corporation's strategy of monetizing every single use of a computer. The shareholders' dividend is more important that the value/utility presented to the consumers.

My guess is that in order to open and read your files, you will need to go online to the Microsoft website, and set up a payment plan with them, and then they will release the programs necessary for you to access your data. Either that, or upgrade to Windows XP, Windows 7, or some other, superior operating system, that does not hijack your data and hold it hostage.

The monetization "cloud" paradigm a pervasive trend with software companies these days. For example, I wanted to edit an Adobe Acrobat .PDF file, and attempted to download the $10 upgrade from the free reader to the Acrobat editor. Instead, Adobe offered to sign me up for a service that was $10 per month. Luckily, one of my computers had the Acrobat editor, which I had purchased and downloaded several years ago.

I believe that Windows 7 Ultimate is that last version of Windows that doesn't have serious (intentional?) errors, and which maintains the prior software paradigm of installation and ownership, and not the modern paradigm of a monthly fee.

Bechtel tried to appropriate and monetize the entire water supply of Bolivia in 2006, so this encroaching problem is not limited just to software companies. There is a general malaise, all around the world, of money addicts victimizing and exploiting people.

A sociopathic, exploitive money addict is now running for President of the United States.

A month ago I bought a nice Dell desktop for my wife, and our computer expert downloaded Windows 10 and Edge, saying we should have no problems. All went well for a week, then it started acting up, finally reaching an apex of poor performance when it shut down, then reopened with a horizontal strip of edge across the middle of the screen. I tried various settings and each time didn't get what I chose. The computer lady came over and tried to reset the thing and found no major errors but hundreds of minor errors over the past few days. She took the computer and replaced Windows 10 with Windows 7 and now it works perfectly.

FWIW

edit: Tom, just read your post. I used to program with Visual Basic until they changed that format, making it incomprehensible to me. Switched to Liberty Basic.

jgill, Win 10 as an operating system has been fine. My beef is with Edge
which is working much better since today's update. Since I use some
programs that require the 'latest and greatest' I need to stay up to date.
My Photoshop and Turbocad like 10 just fine.

Does the latest version of MS VB (.NET) require linking to MS, or is it stand-alone? Anyone.

How do you do that?

My mom has an old computer that I would like to replace. However, she would be far happier sticking with the Windows 7 operating system than trying to learn a new one.

I was not aware that you could buy/install Windows 7 anymore.

The latest W10 update deleted all my printer drivers. I have 3 networm printers. PITA. Then I realised my monitor calibration profiles (spyder 4) were dsfaulted. So I figure what the I have an hor to kill calibrating monitors. But the Spyder 4 won't run. I am not a happy clown right now.

Its still available to business users. There's no way we'd upgrade to Windows 10 where I work - sure recipe for disaster.

So what does it take to buy a business machine with W7?

Is it just buying a more expensive computer?

You have to buy multiple computers in one order?

You need a business license?

Just order from the "business" section of websites like Dell. Simple as that.

I read through the link you posted. It appears to be a year old.

I guess I will browse through Dell's site and see if they have business machines with 7 on it.

I have three WIN7 machines. All legally licensed, but one is the master and I regularly clone it to the other machines' disks.

I don't see why this couldn't be done onto a new machine.
