Two fun short hikes off the Potash Road.
Corona Arch, almost as great as Delicate, but you will sometimes have it to yourself.
And a bit before the parking for Corona is a cool lush draw that goes back in a ways and it's fun.Same side of the road.Surgical tools not required.
I was there a few times before I found the great water at the corner of 128,but you guys probably know that.

I feel like I'm letting STopo down because I am totally flailing here. First I have a cold, and I thought it was just a sniffle, but at night it has been keeping me awake and tiring me out with scratchy eyes about this time of day.
Then, it's sort of sucky weather...
And where the hell does one get a propane cylinder refilled around this place? Gagggg! It looks like I am going to have to either go to the KOA campground or find one of those gas station trade in places.
And now my friend says that since CO is looking sucky weather, maybe we should just meet up and head towards the Red River Gorge. Except he is in Sante Fe, I am here and....there ain't nothing between the apex of out points and there. I have the feeling the long drive cross country is about to begin....
(Does this qualify for the sissy story?)
So - what's the deal with this one???
(I am so happy with this picture, seems all the elements are there. Wish I could get this level of shot more often)
And, here's a picture from the other day, in Cedar Mesa. I guess this is a famous ruin, called "House On Fire."

Boy, I love climbing and hiking out there around Moab, and I especially like staying over at the funky old Apache Motel. Maybe it's the John Wayne photos in the lobby, or the good swimming pool, but it's a fun place to stay. Oh yeah, what's the name of that crazy busy breakfast place in the middle of town? Food's good, can never remember the name.
Colorado mountains have a winter storm going on right now thru Sunday night, all along I70, down into Telluride, up to Steamboat, 10-20 inches of snow predicted, blah blah blah. Moab sounds a lot better than driving in that mess. Supposed to rain all day Easter in Boulder. Guess a better day for brunching than bouldering.

That's Church rock. A fine 5.9 route gets you to the summit. Crazy Mormon mummy story happened there in the twenties.

We left on Thursday morn, just before jeep critical mass I think, but not before getting a few looks at their scene. Seemed like they were always just lined up idle in the shoulder or at the trailhead behind some lead jeep with a little pennant flag. My husband commented that it seemed like a pretty crappy vacation, heading to Moab to sit in traffic.
Anyway, not my gig but I hope they had a nice week.
The Latitude 40 Moab maps show which roads are Jeep Safari routes. Handy for avoiding.

Church Rock! I am so glad I asked.... With a little effort, I found this link:
http://www.justanswer.com/general/0hml6-information-church-rock-utah.html
which asks about it. The answer includes:
"The opening to Church Rock is approximately 16 ft. high and 24 ft. across. The opening was cut by Marie Ogden's religious cult in the early 1920's to make a church. They had plans to hollow out the entire center. These plans were never finished and by 1949 these plans were abandoned, since Marie Ogden's followers had dwindles to just 8 members."
Clicking the link to Marie Odgen, takes one to this link:
http://historytogo.utah.gov/utah_chapters/from_war_to_war/marieogdenledspiritualgroupinsanjuancounty.html
which says, in part....
"By this time, Ogden was spiritually independent anyway; she had developed her own link to heaven. She claimed that her typewriter, through divine manipulation, received messages that told her God's will; it began directing her to seek out the spot where God's "kingdom" should be built."

The artistic aspect of your photographs progressing beautifully. You are getting dialed. :D
Your challenges are proof you are on a real Adventure.
An inquiry, if you would be so kind to respond. I have an opportunity to house/dog sit out in a rural area around here. How much does one charge per day ? Job is for 10 days.....thanks, lynne

From a KSL story tonight:
MOAB - It's time for the 45th annual Jeep Safari in Moab.
Tens of thousands of off-road maniacs descended on the area with their rigs this week for a nine-day festival that culminated in"Super Saturday."
It wouldn't be Jeep Safari without "Potato Salad," the famous hill where thousands gather to see who will be the next one to roll.
<snip>
Jeep Safari is a huge event that has every motel and campground within 50 miles of Moab booked solid year in and year out.

I'm pretty sure we got a propane tank filled at one of the gas stations in the middle of town - the big one next to the in-town campground.

her typewriter, through divine manipulation, received messages that told her God's will This is what happens to women who hang around idly in the Utahhhr desert too long. If they've got a writing machine and an audience they eventually go stark raving bonkers. Either that or become my high school acquaintance Tom Green's 11th wife. Git outta there happie 'fore you go off the deep end too.

Rain, and plenty of it. No doubt some of the Jeepers will be relishing the mudding aspect of it.
Well.... Moab will be here next time. And so will Colorado. I am beginning my trek east either later today or tomorrow morning. Heading to the Red River Gorge, and a little sad because this part is solo, instead of meeting my friend in CO and going together(in separate cars.... don't ask; let's just say that has been part of the adventure). Still, I spent so many years doing pretty much everything alone, that it makes me sad now to look at stretches alone. Oh maudlin me - maybe it is the rain.
I'm also a little annoyed because I was concerned about going through CO passes if it was snowy in the first place, and originally had intended to head there from the south/eastern side, changed my plans and now.... here I am, looking at the road atlas and thinking how to get east...
Looking at NOAA, crossing Colorado in my van is like asking for....an adventure.
It says things like... "EXPECTED TO PRODUCE ACCUMULATING SNOW OVER THE MOUNTAINS THROUGH TONIGHT" and "THE MAIN THREAT WITH ANY THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING."(link: http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=COZ062&warncounty=COC015&firewxzone=COZ220&local_place1=Salida+CO&product1=Hazardous+Weather+Outlook);
Obviously the most direct route is to get up to 70 and head east. But then - it's storming. It occurred to me to cut more southerly, 70 to 550 at Grand Junction, then east on 50. But... NOAA says "ONE OR TWO STORMS COULD BECOME STRONG ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST PLAINS...WITH HAIL UP TO 1/2 INCH IN DIAMETER AND WIND GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH POSSIBLE."
All together now....
YER GONNA DIE!!111
Can some people who are familiar with the elevations of southern CO/Northern NM look at the NOAA Hazardous Weather Outlooks and give me an idea just what I am looking at? The notes about various elevations have me clueless. It looks like heavy winds down low, with a chance of being peppered by hail that could give my van a nice hammered metal texture...
Maybe my best bet is to wait out a few days here before proceeding.
