mantel/mantle sent me diving to a couple authoritative dictionaries, M-W third international and the oxford english dictionary. i'm afraid authority favors pete on this one. i too have always thought "mantel" was a misspelling.
from the OED:
"a special group of senses taken from the french is now distinguished by the spelling 'mantel.'"
this "group of senses" applies to the fireplace mantel, from which i believe the climbing usage, a very recent one which won't be found in these dictionaries, derives. "mantle" has an even older heritage, all the way back to latin, and applies to clothing and metaphoric senses derived from that. both words are related, but there seems to be a sorting out in modern times.
hope that makes you feel better, pete. your sentiments about aid climbing, however, remind me of chamonix guides, decked out with ropes, axes, crampons and clients, wincing at world class trail runners who pass them by on six-hour ascents of mont blanc.

Freeing those routes = inspiring. Haven't you seen what guidebooks are becoming these days? Not just info on what routes to do.
A guidebook psyches you for a trip, it has beautiful full color photos and a few full color adds thrown in.
Sound familiar?
Yup, no need to buy the Magazines anymore (except you, Alpinist <3), just pick up the latest guidebooks and get first ascent stories, new essays by local hardmen (you all have seen the zion taco, right?) and world class photograph of a place you obviously already care about, hence you buying said guide.
Me? I'm all about that. Thats the way, Man.

My favorite moments up there are when I don't have a massive pile of crap hanging off of me, but am moving free and light.
Who cares whats on the cover. Is it not the contents that actually count for something?

are you kidding? if aid climbers start getting heckled i'm gonna be seriously pissed. why do you people constantly NEED something to bitch about, or something to eliminate from climbing, or someone to hate? i've said it once, i'll say it again: get a f#@k'n job.
this site needs to consider partitioning its forum into "useful to climbing" and the "f#@k'n has-been, sprayer, purist, are you f'n kidding me" section.

It's funny how people in some groups, such as writing groups, seek out critical review and want to know when someone doesn't like their stuff and yet there are many people who say sh#t like "If you don't like it, write your own!"
If you don't like it, please always let the writer know. If the writer does not like constructive criticism then they are in the wrong business.
I agree with the O.P. that an aid climber would be a better choice on the cover of the book. Something gnarly with some old guy looking like he's been at it for weeks would be be m,ore fitting of the topic.

IRONY BUMP:
PTPP gets flamed for retrodrilling on aid routes which, by the way, he does not do.
Simultaneously, people who free climb El Capitan are venerated, supposedly including those who retrobolt the sh1t out of perfect piton cracks on El Capitan (e.g. Dihedral) so they have better pro to yo-yo onto.

Aid climbing is super ghey.
You should watch what you say.
It makes you seem like an unintelligent fool.
It's a free country and folks can do as they please.
I don't aid climb, but if I wanted to, I would.

If being a pencil necked techno weenie means you're in the company of pete, steve and WOS crew, shoot I should be so lucky. Polarizing though these guys are, and I don't mean to verbaly fellate them, but they put themselves out there and more importantly are honest about what they do. I can't solo routes like pete, even if I sneak erik khol into my haulbag. steves routes are STILL cutting edge. Call these guys as#@&%es, that's alll good if you feel that way, but you gotta respect their climbing.

A doc might be able to help with that knee-jerk reflex action, there, Westy. Opinions vary, I'm told.
It's all good. Everyone's got their own idea of what might look cool on the cover. Does it matter? No.
Fine, then.Have a nice day & a pleasant tomorrow.

Accurately portraying the majority of EC ascents would or could show a climber on aid.
Accurately portraying the majority of EC ascents would would be like accurately portraying the majority of shoppers in a Chattanooga Wal-Mart.
Nice as a historical document, but not something most of us want to see.

Sometimes, folks will make a cartoon out of the cover, too. Pete T. looks awesome with Dreads, a bit more color, maybe one of those word balloons that comics have....He could be sayin' something like "Yah Mon" or some such.
It's kinda fun. Hehehe. Lame? Maybe. So what?
It's still All good. Content over cover.

I look at those pictures of people free climbing on el cap and feel ZERO inspiration. How many people who buy that book are free climbing el cap? Someone told me today about the photos that Eubanks posted of Heavy Metal and Tinker Toys and those are far cooler to me than some dude free climbing on el cap. But whatever, I'd never buy the supertopo book.
Didn't she rap in from the top and work the headwall? How is that a higher standard than hanging on gear?
