Read the latest Thread please. Death, Alpine Climbing and The Shield on El Cap by Owen. His brother was the one that died recently in a skiing avalanche in France.

This is Super Topo at its best. One young man pouring his heart out in an incredible TR while confronting the wilderness of his life.

I cannot say this strongly enough....people need to be heard. Not rush, rush how now, bye that was great. I mean frickin' heard. The campfire listens.

Such a shame, I was more of a lurker than a poster, really enjoyed reading the posts and seeing the pics that everybody shared.

Going to miss this, Thanks Chris for all you had to put up with

Cheers everybody!!1

Chris and R.J.,

Thanks so much for a fun run on the forum. I've been around for about 15 years, though never really a high profile user or anything. Lot's of laughs, great information, occasional outrage, amazing history, beautiful photos, and general good times.

Thanks again!

Thanks, Chris and RJ, for the 18-year long effort on the Taco.
I was mostly a lurker but I did meet some folks in person and made some friends.
I still miss Ouch.

Thanks Chris and RJ for creating and maintaining the forum for 18 years. It has always been informative and entertaining. Checking in on the forum was a morning ritual that I will miss.

I posted more in the wild west days prior to registration mostly sparing with Jody and Fattrad. But never stopped reading the great contributions from so many especially Tarbuster. News always seemed to break here first…

Best to you both in your future endeavors,
Gary

Thank you to Chris and RJ for creating and maintaining this wonderful virtual campfire. All the slander and mistreatment aside, it has been a fantastic resource, full of entertainment and history.

Some of the incredible threads have such great historical value.

Best to all and see you in the mountains.

Thanks CM and RJ for having provided this platform, which apparently has added values to a lot of people's lives.

RJ,

If you are still answering questions, can you please shed some light on a question that has been puzzling me? If I read it right, one big reason to shut down the active forum, to make it read only, is to cut current cost and prevent future cost increase. My question is from an ops angle -- as long as you still need to pay for the domain registration and web hosting (for the read only content), where does the cost cutting come from and how much is saved if you don't mind me asking?

I help run an obscure forum that only attracts a handful of oddballs, i.e. the coolest people on earth. Whether there is activity or not, for as long as the site is still up, the cost is the same; hence my above question. The domain reg fee and hosting fee are drawn from the bank automatically. Because of that, the co-admin and I wrote into our wills a clause to ensure funds are set aside and ownership is transferred to keep the forum up for the indefinite future in case disaster strikes us both, just so those souls do not feel lost. That leads to my second question: how long do you guys plan to keep this site up, albeit read only? Over the years, I have seen quite a few (useful) sites that vanished without early warning.( I miss ClimbFind for looking for partners last minute. )

It's pretty clear that the Forum will remain up—as a read-only site—only to help SuperTopo™ continue to draw eyes to the site.

In reality, the Forum existed only as a way to bolster a revenue stream, and very little else. There was very little interest in directly supporting any history of climbing or community-building. And, over the years, there were very many opportunities for the admins to preserve and improve the content that was largely ignored.

After June 1st, there really won't be a reason to visit this site any longer. This decision is an excellent way to shot one's self in the financial foot.

Sad.

I bitterly resemble that comment (and will be giving you lots of penalty slack next time I have a chance).

Thanks, Chris and RJ!

You've provided a fine service and some great stories, pics, discussions, and stuff have been posted over the years. Saddened that the lights are going out for the forum.

Well, I guess it is "goodbye supertopo". It was fun while it lasted. Hopefully the campfire will continue to burn in one of the follow on locations--though so far, none seems to quite fit the bill.

To you as well, mike m. You posted a lot of great content here. I hope you might forgive me for calling you names. Cheers.

I hope so too! I really like both of you guys. mike m was my first (and only) ice climbing partner.

mike m, thanks for deleting that other thread (at least I think that's what happened).

And thanks too for being one of the people who kept this place going over the years.

No more tacos for you! :)

Happy routes everyone. May your holds be solid, your shoes sticky and your stories tall. It was a privilege hanging with you.

Those wishing to thank Chris, RJ, and their minions might do so by contributing to the American Safe(r) Climbing Association. A favourite cause of Chris', at least, and a token of appreciation.

Thanks to our hosts, and to all those who contributed positively to this monkey show, and all those I met and (mostly) interacted with. We'll meet again. Vera Lynn is now 102 years old, and still insists that we will.

One door closes, and another one probably opens. What, where, and when? We'll see.

Thanks Chris for supporting this over the years. I always thought this site is an important archive of climbing history. Glad to see the text will be preserved.
