Frumy, Is your photo from this year? I'm also wondering where it was taken. It looks a lot like the fairy lantern (Calochortus lechtlinii) that's found here in the northern Sierras, but it isn't found in So Cal.

It was a very wet March in Seattle. This from this morning within walking distance from my house. Quite a contrast from Bob D'A's bird photos from his hood.

Debbie says that first photo was of a Puya sp.
it's a huge plant, actually, and I was suggesting it was a good thing she didn't have one growing at our house. Her response "dear, I hate to break it to you..."

thanks cliffhanger, i can usually enjoy an unnamed flower(ing bush) but i actually had looked to ID that one,
so impressive was an encounter with the ghost flower ... one fine day in the santa monica's.

wiki says it mimics another necter producing flower, and attracts bees to pollinate without reward

No flowers on this and it may not ever develope them but it is quite interesting
nonetheless. From the UC Berserkley Arboretum...

There's a Mommy and a Poppy? How the heck do they get pollinated in the Namib?

The Hunting gardens are awesome. Especially when the desert section is blooming. I think that would be about now.

Yes to Dr. F's question about how many pics to post. Post as many as you want.

Speaking of blooms. Has anyone been up the Hite Cove trail recently? Are the flowers blooming?

Thanks Ed, I was starting to think it was just something strange photoshopped up for Apr 1. Here's an interesting site, the Blue Puya:

Here's one on topic, Puya alpestris, from Patagonia:

cliffhanger they are "other worldly" flowers, indeed...
the "Succulent garden" has any number of truly other worldly plants, 15 foot high "asparagus" and the like...

that Puya is like something out of the 1960's...

The whole neighborhood smells like oranges right now. It'd make you sick if you didn't like oranges.

^^^ While a very beautiful plant, Echium candicans, Pride of Madeira, is an invasive alien and a scourge on the native landscape.
