At a bit of a crossroads. One girlfriend wanted to go to Woodstock and had it all figured out (tell her father we were just going for a day - originally they werre going to sell single day tickets as well as for all 3 days - and then conveniently not be able to get home) the other wanted to go climbing - well hiking actually but I thought it was climbing then.

So I went hiking but ended up marrying Woodstock girl. If life gave me some do-overs I know a couple of things I would do differently - not saying which....

Traversing from Cathedral Peak to Unicorn by way of Echo Peaks (but we bypassed the Cockscomb.) Took us all day.

Cooling in the fog of Berkeley, getting ready to tour Europe at the end of the fall quarter. Enjoying how crazy the whole Woodstock scene made our parents.

I was 7. That was the summer my best friend Jackie Bartos moved away, and also Timothy Walker moved a few weeks later. When Jackie moved, I was so sad... And when I found out Timothy was moving too, the feelings of loss overwhelmed me and I ran up to him, threw my arms around him, and cried "Ohhhhh, Timmothy!!!!"

My family still reminds me of this at least once per visit.

That was also the summer that my dad loaded the family into the station wagon for a Sunday drive where the sole objective was to "see the hippies in the park." Which we did. I remember they were sort of....draped.... over the various kid's playground equipment. On the monkey bars, swings, and sleeping on the teeter totters. Stoned, clearly. Even as a 2nd grader going into 3rd I could see that.

Near as the folks and I can recall, I was in the northwest corner of the Bob Marshall wilderness, catching trout in a little lake that is still as stunning today as it was then. Sunburst Lake. I was a wee lad on a big walk.

Riding my Taco minibike everywhere.

Sliding down local dry grass hills on cardboard boxes.

Watching the nightly news every night hoping to see a shot of my oldest brother running around Vietnam somewhere and praying he wouldn't be on "the list" at the end of the program.

Growing up - summer before starting junior high.
Far from Woodstock - Enumclaw, WA.
Probably still jazzed about my "space flight" out of a tree on the afternoon before the moon landing in July.
Fortunately it was a soft "splashdown" into springy blackberry bushes.

Heading to Green Oaks Ranch with my climbing partner, to learn knot tying and other stuff.
He had the hip haul bag while I was stuck with this square suitcase...

Sounds like Fletcher and I are about the same age.

I was 7 also, and most likely on some fire lookout out of Darrington, Washington with my Mom. We did that for a few summers after we left my dad when I was 6.
