Yes GR is a strange place. The acceleration of the fracture might have been caused by the explosion resulting from the police accidentally setting off dynamite. The accident occurred while the police were trying to capture a German miner living under the boulder during WW II. Readers Digest version from memory; A German miner filed a mining claim to GR and dug a tunnel/cave under it to live in. The cave had ideal temperature due to the mass of the rock, never too hot or cold for an area that has extreme temperature swings. For entertainment he got a 1 way radio and strung an antennae on the hillside for better reception. The antennae led to him being narked out to the law as a spy during the frenzy of war. The miner barricaded himself in the cave. The cops threw teargas canisters in one of the window vents which accidentally bounced into the miners dynamite stash ending the standoff. If you examine the debris buried under the edge much of it looks like construction debris as well as the usual beer bottles and cans.

Wack, cool story.
There is a similar tale from near Kanab, Utah.
But in this one a german national constructed a crude shelter in the wilderness dozens of miles from town, but actually WAS a german agent (if somewhat mentally disturbed) who's role was as a "sleeper" forward observer who would monitor local activities until the Nazis arrived in force.
The shelter was discovered and the agent disappeared.
Yeah, I know.
WTF would be going on in Kanab that needs monitoring. But thats the story, and there were photos of the shelter.

Looks like a pretty big fire scar there before the crack. Seems that's probably what caused it.

About the Giant Rock
" Seems a couple of days earlier some religious freaks with no outdoors sense built a fire under the Integretron facing side of the rock. The fire blazed all night and stressed the rock internally until it fractured and sent an apartment sized boulder crashing to the ground.
Unfortunately nobody was hurt in the "accident". Now I hear the Shiterra Club wants to put a fence up around the rock - imagine that. "
Now is this the huge rock I have heard about out near Landers? That place is a trip...
Edit: Wikipedia confirmed it to be the one near Landers.

Looks like the work of a giant flint knapper.
Definately a cool rock, and some interesting history.

How fantastic that thing looked with the milk white rock till morons tagged the beauty. I suppose you could sandblast the paint away but not the new fire scare on the rock itself. Sometimes people truly disappoint.

I think off pavement grafitti artists should be rolled in the glass shards left by the partying litter bugs.
The white core of that boulder sure makes an amazing contrast.

"That's a cool find, Happiegrrl."
I can't take credit for finding it. Someone sent it to Dick Williams last year, suggesting the possibility of using similar techniques(pebble under stone) in trailwork. He was talking about the video, and I asked him to send it.
Still - pretty interesting use of some very basic concepts to move heavy objects!
I have to go visit the Giant Rock/Integraton some day. But every time I am out there, somebody makes a comment about that area being "lawless." It's hard for me to even imagine(aren't cops everywhere?), but I'm scared off on going out there without a chaperone.
