Trouble is; the rock is so soft that even "clean" climbing actually,.. isn't,...

Its already happening at IC.
Check out incredible handcrack.

#1 is great except that until I scrolled down a bit, I would not have pegged it as Zion... the rock doesn't look "quintinsentially" Zion-esque. #1 would be good if there was a way to make the rock redder (but that starts a whole 'nother debate).

#2 is solid.

#3 is ok, but aesthetically, if compared w/ #2, I'd pick #2.

#4 is a bit better than #1, rock is redder & def looks like Zion... but it's aid.

#5 If this doesn't make the front cover, maybe the back??

long story short: #1

Yes, readable text space is a strong consideration

#1 has the nice yellow walls for text, and it's a great shot.

need text space somewhere near the bottom, ie. not to many color changes, #2 is better that way...

#2 for sure. Great colors and angle of the wall. Captures the essence of placing natural gear while conveying the balance of fear and serenity one feels climbing.

#2. It just appealed to me. I thought, "hey, maybe I could do that too!" Probably not though, at least not today! har har.

#2, I think the color contrast between the climber and the wall sets this one apart.

#1 because there IS too much rock

It's too bad that that #3 & 5 are not good shots; they are just climbing and not climbing/placing pro

#4 is a great aid shot

1, 2, or 4 capture the height of these walls and the depth of the canyon better than the others by far. Any of those would be a good choice imo.

I feel as if I have seen #2 before, perhaps in a mountain gear, BD catalog, or magazine.
Is that possible?

I would say keep looking.

The first two are the best of the group, but seem staged because of the tricked out camera angle. Of the two, 2) is better than 1) EXCEPT for all of that environmental pollution.

Why would you want CHALK showing up in a climbing picture. Makes it look like a gym, or someplace as popular as the local gym.

My recommendation - Just get a picture of a wall in the best light - far enough away that you get the Big Picture. Put the people inside if you want. The book isn't about a climber, it is about the area.
