Jaybro,

Metal was an 80s extension of 70s "rock." We were just more mad and jacked up as teenagers in the vacuous suburban lifestyle we called southern california, so a gravitation to what was harder, faster and more insane was natural for us. Some 70s rock was classified as metal.

Certain metals were pure expressions of rage at an impotent way of life. Too much energy and not enough brains to know what to do with it. The next logical step was to start climbing. Master of Puppets is a seminal work, but kinship and dare I say origins come from punk sounds. Specifically those pieces classified as 'speed metal'

I suspect there are several folks out there with a similar story or understandings.

Glad to see I'm not alone here.

Some greats mentioned, Opeth, Lamb of god, Cradle, Slayer, Iron Maiden etc...

Anyone check out the newish Megadeth? Kinda like the old Megadeth but more refined. Badass.

But nothing compares to the masters of mayhem, the flaunters of filth, the festering stool on the doorstep of humanity...

I liked Judas Priest on album, but they were not my favorite metal band.
I liked Rainbow and Halen and Sabbath better, that is until I saw The Priest live a few months ago.

Easily the best live metal performing band, and I got a stack of ticket stubb from all those other bands.

Kind of a funny metal story. I am currently driving a log truck and we are hauling down a narrow 42 mile mountain road and everyone uses radios to let the others know where they are to keep out of harms way, and prevent head ons. Anyhow on halloween I was metaling out on my Serius and I had to comunicate over the "Big Radio" my position and direction to prevent a head on in a narrow section, and it did not dawn on me that Seed of Filth was cranking in the background. Now you must appreciate that I am in Northwest Montucky, and noone here has heard anything like this. Also loggers are work 16 hours a day, so are not really in touch with the rest of the world. After about 5 or 6 keys of the mike someone finally spoke up and asked what the sound was. I just chuckled but I do get some stares from a few drivers when we are at the mill. I don't get it, I don't complain or stare when their western music is playing in the background.

Salamanizer GWAR just played here night before last. I'm not a big fan but I do enjoy their enthusiasm. I just don't like getting covered in all that nasty crap.

One for the people mentioning metalica and megadeath. Anyone remember King Diamond?? I wish I had my old colored vinyl metalica albums. Who knew they would be worth money. I really can't stand where that band went after "and justice for all". I'm old school hardcore. Lovin the Metalocalypse!!
Who can tell me the name of the band that sang "die for the indians"??

Jbar most of the Misfits used to be the punk band Black Flag before their metal jazz days - interesting to see how the early punk bands or their members evolved into Metal, Folk, Art, and Jazz Bands and even pop bands. Never interested at all in the newer Post Sabbath metal bands But been listening to punk for over 30 years.

As for punk bands that started playing metal it was around 1985-86 bands like. G.B.H.,D.R.I, English Dogs, Suicidal Tendencies,Circle Jerks and even The Ramones , had that crossover. I remember seeing Motorhead in 1984 at the Olympic Auditorium in l.A. and the majority of people there were punks, Motorhead to me is metal, but they had a following of punks. Seeing Black Flag and The Ramones in 84 got me into punk even though i was into rock n roll and discovering Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in 1981. I always stuck by my roots with Rock n Roll like LED ZEPPELIN being the greatest rock bands ever! And of course the heavyness and dark sounds of BLACK SABBATH with Ozzy and even with DIO is great!Armando

Leather and denim anthems rule! Glad Motothead is getting some coverage here. Anyone listen to Sweden's Wolfpack (or Wolfbrigade--now renamed)? Heresy? Tragedy?

Armando, if you have the time, check out Aquarius Records on Valencia as well. They have an insane selection of Black Metal and Doom from all over. Shaxul is keeping Bay Area Thrash alive, though. Both are great spots.

Anyone have Scorpion's "Fly to the Rainbow?" Pretty damn classic!

I feel that some of the good newer metal is not being represented here. So for those of you who do not know of Viking metal, please get your ears some. Of note my favorite viking metal band is Amon Amarth If you youtube them you will see full songs of long hair twirling. The frustrating thing of new metal is that most of it leeches a bit towards electronic, or the ugly step child of hardcore-emocore. Long interludes of whining. Where Hardcore motivates with its breakdowns, metal is continuous with its intensity. Metal Core is tolerable. A good example of this is HEaven Shall Burn. Now Rammstein falls into the NU-Metal catagory. A piss poor category at that. Relying more on electronic means rather than good ol fashioned axe and drum skill. A Parody bad which has its own cartoon, Dethklock, is great. They have tremendous talent and a great sense of humor. Some other bands for you to review are: Unleashed, Ensiferum, Shockwave (transformers tribute band), A Prayer for Cleansing, At The Gates, ill Remembered

chuckawalla - oh yeah, geez I mentioned metalocalypse before but I meant Dethklock. I laughed my azz off the first time I saw that show. It's classic. Even went to see "them" live. A long time ago I saw Slayer in Portugal and a band called Moonspell opened for them. Their Wolfheart album was awesome but the kinda lapsed into more of a goth metal band after. Too many bands out there selling the same ol shiz. The original bands get weird. Type O went totally boring. "emocore"?? nice. how about deathemo. How about Atreyu. One min they're screaming in the mic and the next you could mistake them for greenday.

asioux - man I'd think that sabbath bloody sabbath album would be worth a mint! Too bad Ozzy and Gene both sit up, roll over and beg for the highest payer now. At least Lenny still has his dignity.

Mrtropy - I'm from way back too. maybe not as far as you but I remember seeing blackflag a few times. If I really wracked my brain I could come up with a HUGE list from all those $15 shows with 6 bands and 10 dollar tshirts. The exploited, the drills, the necros, SNFU, the buzzcocks, etc. Sometimes I let they guys crash at my pad. I carried my son up on stage during an agent orange show when he was a baby and took him to see them when they opened for the Ramones 11 years later so they could meet him and sign a pic of it. Me and Kurt Brecht from DRI had some pretty deep drunken debates. He once gave me a signed copy of his "poetry". lol Crap about living in a tree I think. I'm sure ppl here have heard of marilyn manson?? Well, BITD his band "marilyn manson and the spooky kids" would open up for my friends band. They sucked!!!! Got stories about that too...
