May 23, the friday of the big weekend as there is only 40" of snow in tm

"The latest conditions report from the east side is that Highway 120 has melted out from the road closure gate outside of Lee Vining up to the Warren Fork of Lee Vining Creek, with patches of snow from Warren Fork up to Ellery Lake. Skiers coming in from the east side should be prepared to walk the first four to five miles of road above the gate before they hit the good snow near Ellery Lake. Skiers coming up the Snow Creek trail from the west side report that the snow line begins just above the top of the switchbacks; everything below that level has melted out. "

I've been thinking about this all day. (that's how boring my soon-to-be-over job is) and realized I better plan on having myself up there by May 1. May 23 sounds about right. I looked at the opening date chart and in the past 10 years, it's been open by then 7 times.

But for the sake of argument, I'll go with May 22, in the afternoon.

i've been watching the snow depth a lot at this link:

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryF?TUM

I wanted to see what the unusually warm weekend did. in the last 7 days the snow pack is down 30% from 38.4 inches last week to 26.9 inches this morning.

Snow water content is down about 25% in the last week.

Its going fast!

however, it just takes some big epic storms in late april to set things back another month

The frogs and toads will be very happy this spring/summer.

I vote for Memorial Weekend; the NPS wants that revenue.

I don't know if anything is happening in the Park yet, but Caltrans started on 120 east westbound on Monday, and they had made it to Ellery Lake as of yesterday afternoon, so the road should be open up to the Park Entrance maybe by the end of the week.

In Tuolumne Meadows, you can count on the mosquitoes mostly being gone by November.

Seriously.

Latest Conditions From Tuolumne Back Country Rangers Jeff and Kathi

http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tm.htm

April 16, 2008

Weather: (April 9 to April 15)
High temperature: 60°F (April 13 and 14)
Low temperature: 8°F (April 10)
New Snow: none
Total settled snow depth: 31 inches as of April 16

Ski Conditions and Weather: Spring has finally arrived at Tuolumne Meadows. We had a warm and sunny week, with afternoon highs near 60°F every day and overnight lows in the teens to twenties. The ice has gone off the Tuolumne River, the snowpack is quickly melting, and birds are singing everywhere. We even saw our first wildflowers of the year today over by Parson’s Lodge, where the ground is quickly opening up. The snow has been very firm the past few mornings, but by early afternoon conditions get pretty sloppy. The latest snow conditions report from the east side is that Highway 120 has been plowed from the road closure gate outside of Lee Vining up to the east end of Ellery Lake, so skiers coming in from the east side should be prepared to walk the first four to five miles of road above the gate before you reach the snow. Skiers coming up the Snow Creek trail from the west side report that the snow line begins just above the summer trail bridge, which is about 1/2 mile above the top of the switchbacks; everything below that level has melted out.

Looking at the list of past opening dates is suggestive--7 of the last 10 years, the date has been in May (even with the new plowing rules, they still get it done). Compared to those years, this certainly isn't a very big year. And, so far, it's been a warm spring. Of course, a big storm could set everything off, but it doesn't look like there's one in the works at this point. I predict May 22 at the latest. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was a week earlier.

Joe? ;D"

hey anna, still one of the finest bike rides I've ever done. heading up the partially closed tioga on a memorial day weekend with snow banks starting to resemble the narrows toward the top and not a soul in sight. come on back and we'll do it again. I'm betting on a late opening this year.
so far, no mosquitoes in the valley, but the ants are for real.

Ants! The little buggers were everywhere on. But at night they were eclipsed by the enormous millipedes. Anyone got any information on them. We had no clue as if they were poison spewing monsters, or benign as hamsters.

and the latest opening in memory?

August 10, 1968
and it was still like driving through a wall of 12' high snow and ice on both sides of the road.

I can't beat 1968, but in the 80's?? It was a July 4th weekend opening. This was how my tent frame looked from the heavy snow.
Flouride, looks like your going to be right. melting fast.
