"Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life?"
"The horror... the horror..."
"I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor."
"The horror... the horror..."
"I used to think if I died in an evil place then my soul wouldn't make it to heaven. Well, f*#k. I don't care where it goes as long it ain't here."
"The horror... the horror..."
"What the hell do you know about surfing? You're from goddamned New Jersey."
"The horror... the horror..."
"You dropped acid?... Far out."
"The horror... the horror..."
"This sho' enuf a bizarre sight in the middle-a all this shit!"
"The horror... the horror..."

During our collective reading of 'Heart of Darkness' my high school english teacher started calling me "Marlow."
I try and re-read the Conrad classic every few years.
The movie travels with me. Great for a stoner/rain/rest day.

CHARLIE DON'T SURF.
It annoys me that almost everyone screws up the napalm line.
"You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing
else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm
in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for
twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't
find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know
that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like - victory.
Someday this war is gonna end."
and another favorite:
"Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right."

First saw the film when I was 12 and have been re-watching it every few years since. One of the finest ever made, I think. Views like a great work of literature. From the first moments, the first notes of the soundtrack, you are drawn in to the madness of that world.
Read the Heart of Darkness while working deep in the jungle in Papua New Guinea. Perfect.
Worthy thread Ron.

Yeah, I started this because I made an ApocNow reference to Steve yesterday and he didn't get it. Told me he'd never seen it.
I can't even count the times.
It was nice then to see Redux and have the story ,..uh,...er,..."fleshed out" as it were.lol
Once in October of '92 while waiting for interminable rains to end while working on the FA of Sunlight (how's THAT for irony?) Steve Johnson and Charlie Fowler and I had a marathon Nam video week that also included Hamburger Hill, the Seige of Firebase Gloria (thats a good one), Bat 21, Full Metal Jacket, the Deer Hunter, etc.
That's when Charlie got me to read Herr and Conrad.
Turns out Joseph Conrad was a bit like my dad in that they became truly masters of the english language despite the fact that neither learned it until they were in their twenties and already each spoke several other languages.

Thats funny Steve, we cross posted.
But go easy on that ridicule-sensitivity. That wasn't the intent for either this or the duels (the one where you almost beat me wasn't on the disc???).
Its just a classic film.
Its not like I've seen every single one either.
Jeez I must've missed at least two. Maybe three even.

That is funny Ron,
"But go easy on that ridicule-sensitivity"
Must have forgot to add "LOL"
I forget that it's hard to feel ones intentions or pick up on sarcasm on this internet thing!

Yep, probably my all-time favorite movie for so many reasons. The biggest being the dialogue. You guys got all the good quotes already.
Classic, NO_ONE, a must see.
I loved the seen when they're all jumping in choppers, getting the surfboards tied on at dusk, and the last guy with the bugle starts bugling the 'charge'. That whole scene and them coming in low out of the sun with 'Flight of the Valkyries". Phucking classic!
"Hey, why do you guys sit on yer helmets, man". "Hey, they sit on their helmets, ha ha". "It's so we don't get our balls blown off".

Bluering you nailed the detail that started this whole deal.
Steve was assembling the shooting video and asked about adding music. I said, "How about Flight of the Valkyries?"
Kilgore
"We'll come in low out of the rising sun, and about a mile out we'll put on the music."
Johnson
"Music?"
Kilgore
"Yeah. I use Wagner. Scares the hell out of the slopes. My boys love it."

And even Gunny R. Lee Ermie makes a brief appearance in AN with the one line;
"We spotted a large weapon down below.
We're gonna go down and check it out."
Figures!
He's already auditioning for Mail Call.
