This kind of stuff is all bullsh#t. Come back when you get raped as a woman, or executed by a police officer as a black person. Short of that, this stuff is beneath the dignity of wasting my valuable brainpower on.
If we can all just write off systemic sexism and racism as rudeness, maybe we won't need to do anything about it. Oh that rude cop pulled over that black person for the fifteenth time for no good reason. How rude! Glad that's the worst of it. If they don't like getting pulled over, they can just not drive! Why can't people be more polite, like they were in the antebellum south?
Sure, that'll work, depending on what it is that we're working on ...
One cancerous cell out of the 37.2 trillion cells in our body can mean that we die of cancer. Talk about micro aggression! But that one little cancer cell is no big deal - just ignore it (with the help of our fine-tuned understanding of mathematics) and maybe it will go away.

Strange how the author never suggests giving the dudes a taste of their own medicine.
In my extremely limited experience with this (my climbing outfits tend to be pretty old school-burkini style) nothing works better then treating them the way they are treating others.
One of my faves was loudly commenting to a group of my past gym bouldering buddies that I'd probably show up to climb with them more if they would wear short shorts and go shirtless. Hello man nipple! My buddies laughed, and all others who overheard went quiet and backed away from the ladies. Teach the lesson, if you can't take it, don't dish it.
Seems like according to the media it's a fight out there, so let's win!
Personally, at my current gym where the majority of climbers are guys, I haven't had this problem in year...#Landofskyandrock

We've all already lost with the environment of extreme sensitivity a lot of these types are espousing.

Some people need to grow a micro-backbone . . .
Perfect response. That article looks like something my (married) daughter would write -- for the sole purpose of instigating (i.e. trolling). I find it hard to believe, however, that Clint, with a .edu address, had never heard of "microagressions" before this. Then again, his address is to a Junior University, so perhaps that explains it. If he were at a real university, he'd know the term and the loathing it causes.
;-)
(I need to get my digs in now before the Big Game in November, which we seem to have forgotten how to win).
Cheers,
John

I'm appalled.
I demand that gyms be safe spaces.
In fact, I demand that the federal government make all of climbing safe.
It's my right to be safe.

Amen, brother!
And until these acts of systematic microaggression are addressed, I refuse to acknowledge the American flag or its national anthem. "This" must be stopped.
SAFE SPACES! Yayyyyy!

"We gathered data on the correlation between gender and microaggressions, such as unwanted staring and advice, blatant physical and verbal harassment, and general discomfort in specific areas of the gym."
Why don't they conduct the same kind of survey based on race and class in the climbing gym environment? Now, that kind of survey would be explosive!

You KNOW that those gyms are a hotbed of white privilege.
I will not acknowledge the flag or national anthem until there is a representative population of all people of color in federally certified safe spaces, and that means climbing gyms too.
No little enclaves of racism, man!
