GDavis,
don't you think that family and friends would be happy that lessons are learned from their loss that could save others?
I could not have more sympathy for them had I lost yet another friend to "gravity".
It is not a competition. What is the antonym?

the Hindus place great value on the place where someone's soul leaves their body. Indian Creek. What a place. Surely an auspicious place for another transition out of the material realm. Where to next?

So sorry to read about another rap accident. I think the Jeremy Collins mentioned is the same one who has won at Banff for his art? Talented guy and thanks to him for his efforts to save the victim.

I bet just about everyone on ST has come close to meeting the same fate at one time or another. It's happened to me twice and I feel exceptionally dumb and lucky because it happened twice.

Hi folks,
Mark's friend/roommate here. I wasn't there when the accident happened so this is a second hand information but it sounds like people want to know what happened so here we go.
Mark was on Way Rambo in Indian creek. He was setting up a TR for others. Whatever the reason he had, he didn't want to use his rope for TR so he switched ropes to set up a rappel after leading the route with his own rope. The rope he used was 60 m (we measured it later) so the ends had to be pretty even in order to reach the ground (Way Rambo is about 100 feet tall) but they were not. The ATC was still attached to the rope so again, we measured the length from one end of the rope to the ATC and it was about 145 feet long.
He only fell about 20 feet and when he did, he fell head first. He died instantly.
He was a very experienced rock climber with about 30 years of experience. He used to live in LA and Yosemite was his favorite playground. Just before he left our house on Friday, he was telling me how he aid soloed leaning tower.
He was an amazing friend to me and to a lot of others. He was always the first one to help you when you needed someone whether you were going through a divorce or just needed help disassembling an ice tool. He liked making people laugh, always making jokes.
Be careful out there, everyone! Climb safe! No one needs to go through what his family and friends are going through.

Man so sorry to hear this. Will be double triple checking on rappel. Have been taking some new people climbing and they always like rappelling, but whenever I hear that I tell them stories of things that can go wrong. Not trying to scare people but they need to take it seriously, so many things can go wrong there.

He fell head first.
Anyone else ever found themselves upside down? How is it you found yourself in this position?

It sounds like he came off one end only. Rotation to that side would do the rest. RIP and refresh the mid marks on the ropes.

Way Rambo is 11+/12- and he had led it so inexperience is not a factor. Doubling a single rope for rappel often results in ends that are not even. Once your rap device is only on one rope the other end gets pulled thru the anchor.
It's unusual to have that much of a descrepancy when doubling a 60 meter ropes. Climbing at IC has many of the characteristics of sport climbing. Everyone is close, there often are multiple people at the base of the climb and a bunch of chatter is commonplace......all potential factors affecting a climber's concentration.
He sounds like he was a wonderful guy.....my hearts goes out to his friends.

My brother had a metolious with three markers on it, one for center, and two in between on either end. I always thought it was confusing as hell. Total speculation if this was the case here, but off by 50ft would be where one of the three markers on that metolous my bro had.
Biggest condolences to those who are hurting.

If it was being set up for a TR and assuming the rest were at the base, why did they not yell up to him both ends of the rope were not touching the ground?
