I see. In that case, they probably won't even see this request let alone change things, so the best route might be to ask ST if they can change the protocol?
My point is that you can search for two- or three-letter user nicknames right now with no change in the ST search protocol and without having an avatar to click on.

I'm curious why my original moniker "jgill" became inaccessible to me and I was forced to resort to "jogill." How can one change things like this? I can't even change my e-mail address, which is no longer active but forwards a message to my current address.

I don't know what to do about your nickname, you'd have to contact Chris Mac about that, because as a user you can't change it:
Your name and nickname are not editable so as to discourage forum posting under multiple personas.
But you certainly should be able to change your email address. Log in with your current name and password (if you don't have a cookie that keeps you logged in) and click My Settings:
The page that shows up has an email field you should be able to edit to set to your current address.
