I'm not sure whose law this is, but I've heard it for at least 45 years:

Measurements will always be given in the most inconvenient units, e.g. furlongs per fortnight.

The engineer will produce a working product. The instructions will be written by a junior assistant and transcribed by a front office clerk. No one will test the instructions before shipping.

If it works in the mud and the rain, it will also work when it is clean and dry, but maybe not the other way around.

Thanks to Ed for these beauties!

GRUNDMAN'S LAW - Under the most carefully controlled conditions, the system will perform as it damn well pleases.

EVAN'S LAW -- Every man has a scheme that will not work.

WORAM'S LAW -- Any sufficiently advanced technology Is Indistinguishable from magic.

NORDAHL'S LAW -- Everything goes wrong at once.

EMERMAN'S LAW -- In a crisis, people tend to choose the worst possible course of action.

TARSIA'S LAW -- The obvious answer Is always overlooked.

HARRISON'S LAW -- There Is always an easy answer to every problem -- neat, plausible, and wrong.

MEADOW'S LAW -- It won't work.

CAPPS' LAW -- If It can find a way to wear out faster, It will.

don't look for/create a problem just because you have a solution for it.

Edit: A solution begs for a problem.

A brittle solid like rock can easily be 1,000 times stronger in compression than in tension: therefore, preference should be given to a secure nut or cam placement over a slender, tied-off protrusion or a threaded solution pocket.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
