Oh, and on the climbing issue in the OP:
If you live near the 10/110...
...after work climbing is grim (Malibu, Purple Stones, and other possibilities are there when the daylight is longer, but it tends not to be a multiple-night-per-week thing).
One day off will get you to any of the local sites, as well as Josh, Suicide, Tahquitz, etc.
Two days off and you are into the Sierra, Yosemite, etc.
Of course, you can go to the Sierra for the day if you are willing to play road warrior, stay up for 24 hours, and put lots of carbon into the atmosphere. I've tried to scale back on that shite. In any case, YMMV, but I think LA is poor for after work climbing, decent to good for day climbing, and world class for any time you have 2+ days in a row.

I would rather commute than live in LA. I live in Hemet 45 min from idylwild.
The commute from hell? You get used to it....join us...anywhere along the 60 between the 215 and the 15 is an hour or less from downtown. Plenty of time for good tunes. Start listening to grateful dead live recordings.
cheap, mellow, not trendy....at all....but no airport

Fat..... One of my pals lived in Glendale, married to a sister of a Glendale Officer. When I would roll up to his place at 5:30 am to go climbing.... a Glendale PD would roll up "Just to check"... after a few times they knew my name and would say "goodmorning Guyzo going climbing?" So they are watching out and they are nice.
Nutjob... just stay the heck out of LAUSD land and don't set yourself up with a commute on the 10, 405 or the 101 and you'll be fine.
So your going to come out and hit Stoney this weekend???

My wife grew up in Venice area and lived in the projects there with all the gang bangers.
We went to see her mom in Venice and the gang bangers liked the studs on my snow tires because they made a cool noise.
They wanted to know where they can get studded tires for their rigs.
I said you guys should check out my studded boots (crampons) and you can step on the dudes feet from the other gangs ....

Herr Braun:
I'm dying to know what you said when they asked "Where you from, sa?"
But back to commuting. Has anyone seen one of those real time traffic maps gen'd up so that you could put in parameters, like the last 3 months at 5:00am to 7:00 am, and get historical information.
As far as La Canada to downtown goes, there are some routes that avoid the freeway gridlock.

We lived in Glendale and worked downtown for a few years. Often took side streets in the morning. One route took us through the parking lot at Dodger stadium. 10 miles took 40 minutes.
Getting out of town eastward on any given Friday evening was hell.
But it was a nice quiet area and fairly central to all that LA has to offer.

If you are looking at this from the perspective of a climber who gets out often, you'll be best served by avoiding locations buried within the urban sprawl. And since you'll be working at USC, a place you'll not want to live near, you'll be commuting.
I lived in Northridge for years and worked in Hollywood. The commute was easy most days, but I did not travel during rush hour. It was a perfect jump point for trips up the east or west side Sierras. A bit longer to Josh and Idyllwild.
Now I am in Monrovia, a bit less convenient to the Sierra but still okay, and it is an easy day trip to go to places like Josh and Idyllwild as well as some of those other high desert locations. On a Friday night if I am heading up 395 I'll jump over Angeles Crest highway, dodging that usual traffic nightmare where the 405 and 5 come together. It's 30 miles from La Canada to Palmdale over the crest.
I would take a good look at La Crescenta, even Glendale for those reasons plus you have the 2 taking you straight to work.

I live in and have lived in Burbank all my life, I have to say that if you must live in the LA area Burbank is pretty good. Schools are great, it's safe and it's freeway close being sandwiched between the I-5 and the 134 Fwy.
It's kind of boring but I like that.

SC has a great (FREE!) shuttle system connecting both campus' with Union Station. Having just moved down from SF I can say there is little difference (safety-wise). It is just a MUCH bigger place with A LOT more people....Getting to and from campus using light rail, shuttle and bike is super easy, fast and way cheaper than driving.

I have to 2nd Batrock's Burbank. The Verdugo Hill is a great place to stay in shape with super steep hikes and bike rides. Also a little bouldering. NO scene. City Services are great. Very crime-lite. Police response time is always like 2 minutes or less. Once they arrived before I hung up the phone when a kid from nearby LA crossed over to break my car window.
The La Canada / Crescenta Valley has a great commute down the 2 Freeway to the 10/110 area. It will take up to an hour in traffic but off-hours it's no more than 20 minutes.
Schools - you're on your own. I think public schools rot. Even living 2 blocks from the supposed best one in Burbank. I put three kids through private schools. Cost a fortune but we rose to the occasion. Worked out very well.
I love LA. Great food. Great people. Plenty of ways to earn money. Been here 30 years after leaving North Idaho. It gets better every year, less smog, less traffic. There are people working on those problems and slowly but surely, they have made improvements.
Disclaimer: Results may vary. Use as directed. If you do not achieve happiness within the first 6 months. Move somewhere else immediately.

the further west you get, the less smog - the prevailing winds blow the crap inland.
We live in Canoga Park, and although it is not the best neighborhood, it is close to the 101, Stoney Point, Echo Cliffs and Malibu. It is a bit more of a drive to central, but we rarely get the smog of the interior valley, which IMO, is toxic levels.
Just putting that on your radar...let's do some climbing when you get here!

I've never lived more than an hour walk away ( or a ten minute bicycle ride ) from any job I've ever hed.
But if I had to work in L.A., I'd locate myself at the end of one of the commuter rail lines.
Here in East Redlands, I'm about a twenty minute drive away from the last stop of the train that runs straight into Union Station.
The train isn't necessarily any faster ( or cheaper ) than driving - I've beaten it driving from Riverside to Tustin every time I've tried - but you can occupy your commute time more productively if you're not driving.
By living here - out east - I'm just 77 minutes from Indian Cove ( 77 miles away ), and not that much farther away ( time-wise ) from Taquitz.

Oh no, I just saw this! Bummer! I'll try to think positive and say Pasadena because it is green and closer to JTree but I never lived there. If someone was making me go back I'd only look in Topanga Canyon, or any part of Santa Monica you can afford. Pacific Palisades has some affordable parts, too. I'm leaving too, up to Seattle. I moved to LA right after college and spent 14 years there. Lived all over and found lots of real down to earth people scattered amongst the fakes. I am wishing you well...

It takes you more than 77 minutes to drive from East Redlands to Idyllwild? Are you walking?
Dude...that run goes at less than an hour, even with a string of motorhomes on Hwy 243!

Lots of good advice already given. Are you looking to buy or rent? If you're going to rent, you can always move after trying a place for a while and getting the lay of the land, and you'll have a better idea on how all the variables stack up.
You'd be more than welcome to stay with us if you want to check things out. Once your here, even for a visit, things will start to make sense.
