Translation from Norwegian news article linked in above post:

"The stone blocks that collapsed was, according to police in the immediate vicinity of where the two climbers stayed. And they have found out after going through images from a camera climbers brought."

What a terrible and devastating accident. My condolences to the family and friends of the victims. These guys were the real deal. Really admirable climbers. And, from all accounts, great people.

Be careful out there and be good to each other.

why did these two pursue?
because in pursuit,
life becomes
a skill rather than a habit.

damned circumstances of
the mountain shedding around them.

upon the mountain's dining table
the stumbled.

it just happened to be the
mountain's harvest season.

im always sorry when thriving and ambitious
comrades die.

i understand, and im sure that they understood
that mercy has no place in the mountains,
and thus the potential personal reward justifies
our dangerous habit trails.

tear the next life up, fellas.

The Norwegian Climbing Federation reported on its website. (crappy translation)

The cause of the accident, it will still take some time to clarify all the way out, but so far it seems that it is linked to a very large stone flakes that have detached from the route was climbed. There is a lot of meters large piece of bedrock that has failed. Exactly how this happened and how it is related to the accident, it is too early to tell, said climbing the league.

Bjorn-Eivind Aartun, 45 years old and living in Oslo, but originally from Hellandsbygd in Sauda, and Stein-Ivar Gravdal, 37, originally from London, but in several years living in Stavanger, died in the accident. They went on a spontaneous trip Tuesday and was found dead Friday.

The accident happened about 100 meters above the top of the scree on the headland at the Goat Kjerag. Climbers have fallen 50-60 meters from the shelf they were on and down until they were hanging on each other on a small ledge. The dead were taken out from the Lysefjord Sunday morning by a rescue helicopter from 330 Squadron.

I climbed with Bjørn-Eivind once on an attempt in Patagonia, content to follow an alpinist that was clearly in a different league than a week-end warrior like me... We talked about our daughters (very close in age), family and divorce, climbing, life...
He was such a passionate and modest human being, it hurts me thinking that he is no more with us.

My heart goes to all that knew and loved them, to their families and especially to Bjørn-Eivind's daughter.

RIP Bjørn-Eivind and Stein-Ivar Gravdal!

Six Ascents Nominated For 20th Piolets d'Or

Torre Egger (2850m), Argentina

The Patagonian spires have always lured the best technical climbers on the planet. A distant land ravaged by the southern winds, its granite peaks covered in the strangest of glacial formations. Rime and ice can cover the walls of these polished rocks, and sometimes coat them completely, depending on the wind direction. At the end of December the entire wall of Torre Egger's south face was covered in ice. Norwegians Bjørn-Eivind Årtun and Ole Lied climbed this vertical tower, taking the alpine community by surprise with their opportunism.

Bjorn has a nomination for Piolet d'Or.

RIP, sometime I really hope there is 'life' after death..

so sorry to hear of this news today. i met bjorn in the Kon-tepee, in el chalten, with 3 other norwegians. fellow blondes, of course we hit it off.
then we climbed, and rigged together in norway, in stavanger, and we had a hoot of a time. heather and i will miss him greatly.
i did not know his partner, stein, but had mutual friends who climbed with him on great trango, a magnificent second ascent in pakistan.
our condolences to bjorn's daughter, and all friends and family of the victims, and the small snorwegian mountaineering community.

Very sorry to read all this.

The climbing community that I knew from Norway was very close and supportive. I'm sure they are hit hard by this.

Rest in peace gentlemen.
