I too am interested in job ops in Bishop. Liked the thread until, as it usually does, went off topic. Could of pointed out that Vern sells his artwork in Mammoth...much more interesting.

Bob, how long have you been on this site? This is the first thread where I've seen your posts.

As to the topic, I can only add that employment in Inyo and Mono Counties has always been a challenge. One of my classmates in law school got a summer job in Bishop (I don't remember which law firm), but didn't pursue it for permanent employment. I was too chicken to move there, and missed the opportunity, though practice in Fresno gives pretty good mountain access, too.

I knew one person with an advanced degree in far eastern languages from a junior university in Palo Alto (as we Cal grads refer to Stanford) who eventually did reasonably well cutting and selling firewood, but all of these are long-term projects. If you're going to be there only for the length of the research project, the seemingly joking replies about menial jobs are, sad to say, awfully close to the mark.

Be a nurse, respiratory therapist, paramedic/fire fighter, public school teacher, Cal trans engineer, work ski patrol then wildland fire in both seasons, or a particularly charasmatic & cute bartender/waiter.... good long term options that the right person can make work. Might have to wait a bit (6 months to a year) to find the oppurtunity. Most common ones I can think of!

My friends that work restaurants have been hurting $ wise a lot this season with the bad snow year.

Otherwise you got various city workers, law enforcement, and public land management/gov jobs seasonal and not. Some requiring post grad degrees.

Fishing and climbing guiding is good seasonal for some, but hit or miss in the off times for most.

Not a good place to work tech jobs from home- web designing, engineering, etc since the internet is sooo slow on the east side for at least another 3 years or so. Some of the existing local companies are actively $$$ boycotting getting decent internet speed since they will lose the business overnight the day we get anything halfway normal service wise.

I'm an ICU nurse at Northern Inyo Hospital for a year and a half now loving it so far!

There are 5 of us nurses that referred each other and moved out here from Flagstaff, AZ ICU in the past 2 years. Good way to go!

Bob is empowered to direct the most, or almost the most, essential agency in Inyo County.

Susy Schley brought Elaine into this World. Is that too off topic for you?

OP - have you yet to come to terms as to why you do not live here?

It's like a climb, if I might be so cliche.

You come here. Get a job, doing whatever...hopefully something purposeful which enriches you as much as, say, a climb.

Now, imagine that if that Climb were to lack just one hold, it wouldn't go.

Now, if you want a job out here, invent one.

Instead of a focus from piece to piece (AKA piecework), imagine...you are free soloing, ledge to ledge, hold to hold.

You are now 30 years off the deck.

You no longer live in your Van; you have children, and these children are both outside and and the center of your foci.

Come on up and join us. Shack up with Charybdis and Scylla. Treat you right, kid. Candy and cigarettes.

Telecommute. Solicit contracts in other job-rich areas and work remotely in Bishop from your PC or Mac via cable modem or DSL.

Digital 395 should make telecommuting a bit better. Here in Mammoth internet is in the bottom 10% of the USA, but with the new fiber optic cable coming it should make it tolerable at least

Packed up all my stuff in Bozeman 14 years ago today.Loaded everything in my parents truck,my truck, and a uhaul.Loaded the dog up and headed to Bishop.Threw everything I had down on a house and made the full gamble. My passions are climbing, flyfishing, and skiing so I figured it was a wise gamble.Good employment for the first five years, but it's been touch and go since then.Somehow got the house paid off(also got in whilst the market was good).Currently unemployed and it's tough but I've NEVER regretted it.Come join us,it's really tough to beat.Now... What to do with my day??? I should get a job.Nah,think I'll head outside.

WooHoo!!!Fourteen years old(in Bishop years).
