Vancouver and Seattle = Constant rain, will make Scottland seem like a desert. But better job and great cultural opportunities. Many more days of good climbing and skiing are to be had in other cities though.

SLC and Reno = Very abundant, world class back country skiing and climbing (multiple lifetimes worth) . Can't touch the international cultural aspects of Seattle or Vancover though. Reno has many nice neighborhoods, though none you are likely to see driving through on the freeways or anywhere near the University. Reno is a small city, maybe only 300,000 including the immediate surrounding communities. Generally you can get anywhere from downtown to anywhere else in town in about 15 minutes, which is convenient. Though some cragging can be had closer, the best climbing is 45-60 minutes away from downtown Reno. (Lake Tahoe, and Donner Summit, is about 45 minutes away)

In general, much better job opportunities in SLC, and just about anywhere else, than Reno, but maybe your line of work is not affected by the poor economic climate in Nevada right now.

No diversity of rock in Reno/Tahoe?........lmao! Tons of climbing on volcanic tuff and basalt, in addition to all the perfect granite. And only a few hours from Yosemite (A place that does actually "suffer" from diversity of rock, lol) Winter cragging three hours away in Owens River Gorge, among other options.

Ultimately, it will probably come down to where you can find work. Pretty poor job market, with lots of competition, in most regions of the States these days.

Good luck!

A-one hit it on the dot ^
Reno has more than 1 type of rock. They have both granite and volcanic, but the climbing isn't too good in Reno/Tahoe during winter. Reno has cheap rent, or if you have a few thousand dollars, you can probably just buy a place.

In the US, your destination lies somewhere in Colorado . . . CA cannot compare.

You guys trying to scare our Scots lad with woeful tales of rain must be on crack!

The U of Washington has one of the top 3 med schools in the country and is
always near the top for med/bio grant money.

On the other hand I just discovered last night that there is a Ben Nevis
near Tucson, Arizona! I'm heading down there soon so's I can claim to
have bagged both in full winter conditions.

FOR RENO

Greatest number of consecutive days without measurable precipitation (NOT COUNTING THIS LAST YEAR WHICH I BELIEVE BROKE THE RECORD) Yet still got 56 feet of snow in the mountains 40 minutes away from Reno. No precip all summer and boat loads of powder in the winter. Not a bad climate for climbing/skiing. Kinda spoils ya.

(Consecutive days of trace or less of precipitation)

If the University job prospects are equal...

Go to Boulder if climbing is your priority. You can ride your bike to the closest crags, there are probably 2,000 routes within a 15 minute drive and a hour's drive will get you to an astonishing collection of varied climbs, from sport to alpine trad. Backcountry boarding is great by every standard except SLC and Vancouver.

Go to SLC if boarding is your priority. The amount and quality of the close-in terrain and great snow is second to none. Climbing around SLC is like riding around Boulder: great by every measure except Boulder. You'll avoid the weird Mormon vibe if you live in downtown SLC but you'll suffer the horrible winter air there. The area by the University is usually above the murk that lurks when the health officials tell you to stay indoors.

The skiing outside of Reno and Tahoe is spectacular but the close climbing is pretty limited.

I haven't spent enough time in Vancouver but it seems like there is a good combination of great riding and climbing within an hour or two.

Good luck,
Mal

...CA cannot compare...

Them are fighting words. So this scene in California cannot compare to Colorado, for either skiing or climbing????

California is a pretty close second to Colorado, and either one is head-and-shoulders better than anywhere else in North America.

As for winter climbing in Tahoe, you need ~43 degrees + sun and some dry south facing rock. We've had lots of that this year. Climbed at 6300' the other day. If I didn't have school/work, could have climbed a whole lot more this winter. Can't say that for last winter (record snow) but in a winter like that you'd be skiing anyways.

Seattle would be cool, but Wenatchee has it beat hands down for climate and access to climbing and skiing. But you need to like dry weather and to be able to subsist without weekly ballets and such.

I did all my schooling in SLC and can vouch for the nearness (less than 1 hr travel time) of excellent snow and varied and excellent rock. The cultural thing...well...you learn to cope. Or you could assimilate into the Mor-Borg ;-)

...but maybe your line of work is not affected by the poor economic climate in Nevada right now.

Well...mining in Nevada is going great guns! And bio-leaching of mineral ore is a hot, new frontier these days. Here's a link to a story about Nevada expecting to add at least 1,200 jobs in the mining sector this year.

Bell, I lived in Seattle for 17 years, if your tired of maritime weather the place is not for you. Boulder is your best bet. Better rock climbing than SLC and good access to back country skiing although not quite as goodt as SLC. Great climbing community with a good number of expats.

Rock Climbing? has to be Boulder.
Boarding? SLC
Lower Crime? Seattle.
Academics? All threerank well in ARWU rankings of 500 highest rated world universities; U-Washington 16th...UC Boulder 32nd...U-Utah 79th

Scottish? Utah has second highest per capita people with Scottish ancestry in U.S.

strange that you have to join a members club to buy whisky - if its populated by scots i'd have thought they would have declared war on the mormons!

or maybe they were the 'wee frees' (hard line prespyterians from the west coast of scotland) that liked the mormon culture??

For california, I voteSouth Lake Tahoe... Easy access to the stuff up HIGH around Kirkwood which generally gets the most snow. If there is plenty of snow, hard to beat Emerald Bay/Jake's/Tallac zone. Or if its a monster year, head down down 2 hours and ski massive stuff on the East Side.

East Side would be the best except for the hit or miss snow conditions on the big 13,000+ peaks. I lived in Bishop in two moderate to low snow years and it was painful to stare every day at Mt. Tom, Basin Mtn, Laurel Mountain, Mini Morrison, etc which never got quite enough snow to be good. If i'd been living in So. Tahoe those years i would have gotten a lot more B/C in (but a lot less time under the Eldorado Roof in the Gorge).

...lots of Mormons have Scottish ancestry including me.

But if you're about clan warfare let me recommend Butte, Montana...Ireland's fifth province. There's a college, rock climbing, boarding but few Mormons... OR Presbyterians!

A very nice statue of the Blessed Virgin on the hill...

...and plenty of Mick whiskey, sir.
