My step-son Justin lives in the Portland area and in addition to being a commercial pilot, is the beer buyer for Otto's Sausage Kitchen (awesome place BTW). He brews a mean home brew that rivals any I've tasted but one time while visiting he asks me if I want to go to an industry function at one of the micro-brew distributors. I figured that I'd go just to hang out with him for the afternoon not really expecting much.

Next thing I know we’re at a gigantic micro-brew tasting with hundreds of boutique brands represented from all over the country. Those NW folks take their beer seriously and had some killer brews there. I almost felt guilty that such an experience was wasted on me since I rarely drink beer, but what an awesome time we had sampling probably the best of the best in micro-brews.

I have tried Ghost's Dubbel Overhang and it is really good. When he says he makes great brew he is not just stroking himself. the man has a way with brewing. I loved his stout and I don't usually drink that style.

I will try that Estate brew from Sierra Nevada. They craft a good product.

Bluering, I'll keep my eyes out for the beer when I hit the store tomorrow. I don't think I've seen the estate brew, but if I do, I'm on it.

Ghost- I know what you mean about the home brew. I have one I've been doing, a pale ale along the lines of the basic sierra that I have got dialed in. It's as good as a store beer.

Next batch, I'm going to double so I have good drinking beer. Then it's back to experiments.

My dads garage is consistently 35 degrees, so I'm thinking I'll experiment with a lager. I'm thinking a black lager.

Who's tried the IPA from the Jolly Roger in Ballard, Seattle? I think that's what the brewery is called, the beer was that good!

The brewery is actually Maritime Pacific, their pub is the Jolly Roger. But it ain't under the bridge anymore. They moved a few blocks east. Just completed the move. But the whole area is getting yuppified. Next thing, the city'll probably start rousting the homeless folks from under that bridge because the new Trader Joes is upset about its image.

Most of their beers are ordinary, but they do make a good IPA.

"They have had a tendency to hop the piss out of their beers to compete with Sam Adams, where Sammy always wins IMO, but this time Sierra wins."

blue, you are clearly more interested in the ability to drink quantity of beer....

Myself, I'm more of one of those intellectual lefty snobs who is more interested in quality of beer.

I like my IPA's just like I like my politics: extra bitter.

After a steady diet of quality IPA, Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada (reasonable pedestrian beers, mind you) taste like Seven-Up.

It's as good as a store beer.

Keep at it for a while and "as good as a store beer" is how you will describe your failures. Well, okay, some failures can be way over the far horizon of weirdness, but they won't be ordinary.

Here's my nightcap...

As good as store beer, that's the drinking beer. The beer that is in the fridge at all times for when you just feel like a beer. This pale is pretty standard, but fresh, you know?

When you pass it on to a freind there are no buts. No, "it's good but." It's good and you want more and sometimes I don't want to share.

I'll usually stick to ales and get hoppier as the season progresses, then by spring switch to malty beers and malty lagers. I've never made a lager, though I've done a steam style. My dad says his garage is running a constant 35. I think it's worth a shot.

I'm broke by the way, and have no room for an extra fridge. If I did have an extra fridge it would be full of meat anyway.

Failures are stinky, failures taste like sour apples, failures have funk, not good funk. I have had failures. I used to run fifty fifty. I think the wort chiller made a big difference. Less exposure and more accurate pitching temp. I've been 100 per cent since the chiller.

I'm kinda, 'over' beer. Not to say I won't enjoy it at times. Bluey maybe you could send Blitzo one of those, for a full review....

i couldnt afford to climb properly equipped if i drank a beer with that kinda price tag, but for a special occasion...finding a 20 dollar bill for example, it would be ok. Over the years Ive developed a climbing protocol based on 6 beers a day, that allows me to be the best i can be.

24 ounces of beer, no matter how tasty it may be, is not enough to enlighten my spirit nor summon enough cranking chi for me to climb at the pinnacle of mediocraty - like a glow worm amongst grubs.

Our paths may be different, but climbers drinking beer are doing gods work. Blessed art thou.

arguing over which beer is best is like arguing over what the best music is. Right out of hs me and my buddies got into stouts and porters, the stiffer the better. Then i went thru a pilsner phase where the european green bottles were my fave, after that i took to sweet dark ales like dopplespadden and san miguel dark. Thru the years my tastes have constantly changed, and i tried about everything imported i could find.

With the thousands of microbreweries out there today and the many varieties offered by larger brewers, you have a good chance of finding a brew that is perfect for your current taste, but there are as many "best" beers as there are beer drinkers.

And dont you hate beer snobs? Who gives a dam how much you know about beers, it doesnt make you any more qualified to judge a beer than the next guy. That expert act may fly with the wine crowd, but beer is the choice of regular joes, the common mans tonic. Lecturing on beer aint gonna impress anyone except maybe your mom, so spare us

bluering it's nice when a fine beer befriends you.

when the taste complements your gob.
and the buzz complements your sorrows.

lately i've had mis-fires with all the beers i've sought.

i don't know why? sleeps been difficult. stresses have mounted.
finances suck. kids are challenging. those kinds of things sour my pursuits at times. and i've not been clawing at the rock in epochs.

have one for me and i'll try again tonight. maybe i'll sit bare assed in the snow with an irish coffee and a half grin. winking at boo-radley.

salud.

here's one for roxjox though he dubbed me a dumbphuck anyway:

twas the night before the next day, and all thru the mountains norwegian chased the breeze:

whoaa, petrified beer. i pried the ale from the stone like a hero, though im not.

DMT I am staring at a La Fin du Monde that is waiting for the right chance to be consumed. That picture only makes me more excited. La Monde will be perfect on of these nights. I am a poor college student, so a step up from PBR is welcome.

I've become quite a fan of Rogue. Admittedly, they have backslid a little over the past few years as the brewery becomes more well know, but they still brew a mighty fine beverage.
They're dead guy is my go to ale, but for special occassions, if you can get ahold of the Double Dead Guy it's outstanding.

I agree with the thread above regarding the fin. Very good.
