1888: Naturalist John Muir visits Mount Rainier and climbs to the summit with Maj. Edward S. Ingraham. "Did not mean to climb it," Muir wrote in a letter to his wife, "but got excited and soon was on top."

The US Gubmint closed the Pikes Peak Signal Station in 1888, just after reconstructing it. It was decided the station was not helping them determine weather for the Great Plains after all. Remember the blizzard of that year which wiped out TR's and everyone else's spreads? Fossil Climber might. :O)

Skully: Re your request for "real-drunks" to start posting------that could be difficult, (since the real drunks are out partying, or unable to type) but MM is on a roll tonight. Not at all in line with his mellow dope-smoker past posts.

MM may be channeling: Satan, alcohol, or meth------or worse yet: "soul-gnawing-I'm better than them-ism."

It's all good. I'm just being sarcastic. That's harder in text than in person. Hopin' for a redpoint, anyway.

Gas blast levels Mass. strip club; 18 people hurt

Sorry, but no news of blasted strippers or sinners.

It appears the club wasn't open at the time.

This may not be the: "vengeance of god."

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!! I do *one* 24-hour push trip in Roppel Cave, Kentucky, and all the nasty drunks come out and start fighting. I can just imagine you wankers sitting behind your computers and throwing virtual punches at each other - and missing. Too funny!

Man, am I spanked. Five and half miles from the entrance, the first five miles ain't bad, it's that last half mile that kills you. At least the water crawls were dry, a significant benefit in 54F temperatures. Long crawl over chert, flat out, rolling your pig ahead of you, through the 9" squeeze, no problem. Then comes the eight-inch squeeze, trivial thirty years and thirty pounds ago, not even viable these days.

Well, I got through the squeeze, it was the bend beyond. Amazingly, my new caving buddy Stefano - recruited off of McTopo this spring to help us fix pitches on the Captain - proved his worth on his first ever "real" caving trip, about as tough a trip as you could ever do.

Somehow he forced his body around this bend, into continuing tight passage, very very tight. He reached a turnaround point, and I'm like, "Dude, you need to come back! YOu have only one source of light, and we can't fit through to rescue you!" A very stout push indeed.

This passage was supposedly pushed 30 years ago to walking-sized passage. The airflow matches the description, so does the yellow sand. But the passage is too small. It doesn't seem possible for anyone to have pushed solo beyond where Stefano wisely turned around.

If this passage goes, it will need to be pushed and surveyed by people like I used to be thirty years ago - 5'9" and 125 lbs. Sigh. Those days are gone.

Drinking Chianti here at the Cave Research Foundation in Kentucky - woo-hoo! I'm wasted after an overnight caving trip. As usual.

So, Dr. F. is a Hoser, eh? Too funny! I'm a Merrican for the very same reason.

Making up for missing Friday night now.....

Starting out with a basic cheapy Merrican beer, brought back from Kentucky last weekend after I missed the Friday night post being underground.

I put up Christmas lights today. I'm not sure why, I don't much like Christmas. Fortunately, I am going caving right afterwards.

I played in a great jazz jam last night in Toronto. Played both trombone and piano, definitely going back next Thursday!

Is it OK to have one beer and some high quality sensimilla, and still post here? I won't be drunk and will still be able to walk a straight line, but I'll still be having a pleasant evening.

Cheers!

My politics stay in that insane thread of yours, and I check in less often now.

I want this but it's very difficult to procure, kind of like Pliny;

Haven't tried it yet, but my cousin lives in the same town as the cannery and says its ridiculously good.

Hey.

I found this review of Heady Topper on the Beer Advocate page;

As good as it gets this beer makes you smile ear to ear. As soon as it gets close enough to your face you know something worthwhile is about to hit the fan; sh#t the golden goose would be envious to produce. From the smell to the initial taste on your lips, it's a fall in love experience that very few beers can replicate. I advise you to seek out this beer and have at it. Unfortunately, I only had one in my possession but i've sampled it a couple times before and it's always the same reaction--Good. Good god it's good.

The appearance if you defy the makers and put it in a glass is nice and expected if you pour a good DIPA. Golden, slightly hazy and with big porno head it looks inviting. One thing you'll notice is white snowflakes floating around as if this were the ghost of Christmas present's snow globe. It wants you to know to drink it now.

The smell is a sweet bouquet of hop, pine and fruity citrus. Oh, it's fresh too, like the wet morning dew on a blade of grass. Each whiff is like getting in close with the incarnation of Carmen Miranda. The aroma is memorable.

The taste is what will reel you in big fish. It's hop, it's floral and fruity, it's bitter yet sweet. Bitter sweet since this was my only one and living in Florida keeps me forlorn from its ambrosia. Citrus and fresh grass swirling in a vortex of hop is what I get, maybe a hint of vanilla in it. A splash of orange flavor, and you can throw in a grapefruit taste too. It's welcome to the jungle and it's all fun and games.

Great drink ability is the lovely conclusion to a great tasting and fragrant beer. I feel this beer will make true believers out of anyone fortunate to drink it. I'm usually a stout guy, I love the malt, the semi-sweetness with coffee and chocolate flavors, the thick hearty nature of it's character and yet I find myself thinking this beer is easily in my top three beers ever. It's drinkable, it's drinkable now, later and between, in any pocket of the multiverse and moment in the time continuum; but drink it now before it's too late.

That's one funny review!

Silver going off drunk on Dr.F a couple weeks ago was the funniest ever Friday night on this thread. Both of you should be very proud.

I however am ashamed to say I'm dry and boring this week.

Oh for f*#k's sake, Spider - get a freakin' drink, will ya?!

And why is it everyone can bash the sh#t out of us Christians, but heaven help us if we dare say anything bad about Moslems.

Hey - you Moslems! You're all a bunch of Habeily bomb-making suicide wankers who veil your girls, even though there's nothing in the Qu'ran about it.

[Actually, my next-door neighbour is a practising Moslem, and the coolest guy ever. I really respect him, and his religion.]

Now, why did I post? Um .... I forget. Has something to do with the margarita I just drank [I had to type that three times to spell it right] and the bottle of Old Vine Foch I just opened, from ---- I hate to admit I'm drinking Cdn. wine, but it's pretty good - Bee Cee.

Now, do any of you wine aficionados know what/who Foch is? And no looking it up! In other words, don't do as I do, do as I say!

So, Dr. F., as one of McTopo's all time Nameless, Faceless and not necessarily Dickless anonymous types, what is your Real Name and hometown, please? Is there a photo of you in the "who the hell are you" post?

Hey, Fritz, don't we wish we were here? Yeah, crab empanada and a Beagle brewski.

That's as close as I'm gonna get to a real brew for another week.
Well, that's not quite accurate. I can open the reefer and look at 'em. :-(
